Why is my Kayak fare alert false advertising?

I’ve been scoping flights from LAX to YYC, and for a couple reasons, I’ve been unable to pull the trigger on the earlier fares where I was okay with the price. So, I’ve let it run, and for the past week, fares were up over $500, which I didn’t want to pay. Now, two out of the past 3 days, I’ve woken up to find my fare alert mail showing the price dropped significantly. However, when I click on the fare from the email, Kayak displays prices that aren’t even close to what the email message shows. MOTHERFUCKERS!!!

Because it is the lowest published fare for those cities at some point in the next 330 days. It isn’t for the dates you have selected. Plus all the OTA websites these days only use cached pricing, so you really aren’t guaranteed that price until they execute the final transaction, typically after you enter your credit card. Some of the airline sites have direct connect fares and may begin holding inventory earlier in the process, but the OTAs (Expedia, Travelocity, Priceline etc.) Stopped holding inventory a decade ago.

  • Fares displayed are for round-trip economy class travel found by KAYAK as of the date and time listed. Fares include all taxes and fees but may not include baggage fees charged by carriers.

FUCK YEAH BITCHES!!! $298!!! RT & FUCKING NON-STOP BOTH WAYS!!! YES!!! I’ll let Kayak off this time. Wow – close to $600 this morning, and now less than three-hundred.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort here I come!!!

Sites like Kayak and Allegiant Air store your IP address and the price increases with multiple visits. Try it with a different computer at work or at home if you were doing it at work before, or worst case the public library. You will get different prices. Best bet is to wait until you are ready to buy, and if you like the price, go ahead and purchase them now. Those sites will not get lower if you check back later. Traditional airline websites will fluctuate prices a little but rarely go below what kayak or orbitz offer.

Also, if you don’t care about airline, you can try the priceline negotiator option. You only get two chances, so don’t lowball too much, but your offer can usually save your a decent amount of money.

Kayak is for the birds. Google flights is where the real party is at.

Nice! Kicking Horse is a rad mountain. Have a good time!

Or just change your ip address
