Why is it? Ref Newtons

I have been debating for a couple months about getting a pair. BUT…the big question…Why is it that only triathletes wear them and not world class runners??

'Cause we’re early adoptors. Just wait…

Cause you can’t possibly be a fast runner without changing to mid-foot striking and buying Newtons.
LOL

I definitely agree with that statement.

Or because we will by anything in an attempt to be made faster instead of just training harder. Lots of triathletes like to spend on this hobby.

see, U.S. Marathon runner Josh Cox: http://www.joshcox.com/

I agree also. And Newton hit the goldmine with the coverage they received in the current issue of Runining Times, in the article “Run Softly, Naturally”. The three footstrike photos accompanying the sidebar “Run Naturally” display the Distance model, which is also one of the three models (the other two are Ecco BIOM A and New Balance 800 MF) used and pictured as examples of shoes that promote/encourage midfoot running.

Moreover, there is a fairly lengthy synopsis of a study conducted by a Dr. Patti Christie as part of her Chemistry of Sport class, and her data are as supportive of Newton shoes as could just about possibly be imagined. There is also mention of Natasha Badmann and Criag Alexander and the performances they have turned in wearing Newtons.

If this doesn’t catch the attention of the run-only crowd, nothing will.

Suckers…

Serious runners are notoriously loyal to their brands and feareful of change.

If this was not the case, they would all be triathletes.

The guy who designed Newtons had been making custom orthos for many of the top pro triathletes for years, and got several of them to invest in the company. So it’s only natural that that is where you’re going to see them first in triathlons since that’s where all the exposure/marketing initially was focused.

My wife has a pair. They are nice shoes. But they’re expensive nice shoes. My current fave light trainer (http://69.94.23.162/xcart/product.php?productid=16126&cat=243&page=1) costs half as much. I’ll stick with these and other shoes that I think are just as good at half the price. Food and wine, stereos, cars, running shoes…so many places where everyone’s optimal perceived value point is all over the place. Ultimately all you can do is try a pair if you need to see what all the excitement is about.

The store I work for doesn’t sell Newtons, thus why I dont buy them. I get my Brooks Infiniti’s for ~$55 a pair for training. Best shoe for my foot and I’ve tried all the ones we sell.

We already know that world class triathletes wear them…

Most world class runners have a nice shoe sponsor already.

Perhaps the question would be “why don’t runners wear Newtons”. My answer would be that a typical running specialty shop has many different brands, Newton being one of the choices. The price tag steers people away, both in obvious cost but also because the perception is that they are higher-end shoes. Runners are fairly loyal (slower to change) and buy lots of shoes…Newton is still new and would double the runner’s shoe budget.

Most loyal runners are injury free as well. This leaves Netwon’s running targer market for injury prone newbies with lots of money. Typically this is a triathlete, not a runner.

Just about every serious runner I have spoken to is very skeptical about the shoe. Hell, I have no confidence in the shoe myself given what I’ve heard from some people. Not to mention the number of people I know who have broken a metatarsal wearing them.

Thanks, Chris

That is very well said … bravissimo!

Oh, and I completely agree.

You have been thinking about getting Newton’s now for a couple of months (I bet longer) my suggestions is just get a pair try them out if you like them (Im sure you will) then fine if you don’t like them send them back. Who gives a rats ass if world class runners wear them at that level its all about sponsorship anyway.
If you do order some Newtons my suggestion is brake them in slowly just ease into your runs with then as they do have a different fell to them and it does take a couple of weeks to adjust.
