Why is bike packing such a pain in the a$$?

Bike packing. I’ve even come into work to avoid it. It takes sooo long and it’s like trying to solve a rubiks cube. I started an hour ago. I’ll get back to it later…

Try packing a COMPUTRAINER for shipping…

makes the bike packing look easy…=p

why does it take you so long? i can pack my bike in 10-15 minutes now:-)

I only do it a couple of times a year and I normally borrow a ‘clam style’ bike case. This time I’ve borrowed a vertical loading two part box which I haven’t used before and getting it all to fit is requiring a lot of rude words…

I’m a wrench weenie. Always take mine into the LBS and have them do it. That way if something is screwed up I have someone else to blame besides me…

I’d hate to trust anyone other than me for my pride and joy. If I f*ck up, it’s my fault…

Yeah, well, I also know when to say “uncle!”…I know I would f*ck it up. I trust my LBS since I’ve used them before and have had very good luck. They’re pros. Here, I’m strictly and amateur.

You must be tall. It is easy to pack a short person’s bike (like Marisol’s grin) but finding the right angles in the box with a 62 cm frame takes a little more brain power.

Good guess, I’m 6 ft 3. The bigger problem is getting the bike with wheels either side and fitting the handlebars in…

If you have aero bars you will probably do best to remove them or at least loosen the claimp so they can rotate independently from the base bar. The little ‘turn and drop’ move that some bike boxes show in their diagrams do not work as well on a big bike.

Have you pulled the skewers from the wheels? Some people forget, and it makes all the difference in the world.

Yep removed the skewers. I’ve got oval bars so I was going to unclamp and fix them to the side of the frame with padding as I have straight extensions…

Measure the position of your armrests, then pull them off. That should give you a little more clearance as well.

And make sure you put the fork cap back on the fork after taking off your handlebars…I learned this trick the hardway. Nothing like riding a century with your handlebars just loose enough to turn because you didn’t realize that ‘little spacer’ had fallen out in a bike box 2 hours away from the start of the ride. I litterally had to relearn how to ride a bike in the first 10 miles of the ride.
