Why is a mavic COmete so expensive?

Just wondering, $2,000 is it better than a zipp?? faster than anything else? lighter? seems pricey.

So the iO doesn’t seem *completely *retarded…

huh???

I think the comette is actually pretty heavy compared to a zipp.

Mavics arent always the lightest or cheapest wheels, but they are extremely well made and generally bombproof.

Cause it’s FRENCH?

Cause I’ve NEVER seen an IO or Comete in ANY race I’ve ever done?

'Dunno

I personally really like Mavic wheels though (I’ve got 20,000 + miles on my current set of Ksyrium SSC SLs) and I’ve only trued the rear wheel once!

Simon Lessing was rolling one at Timberman, but thats about all I’ve ever seen on them
.

raced one at Disney 70.3 a few years back. By far the best disc I have ridden. Others I have tried are Corima and Zipp.

Unfortunately I had to return it to the store. I could not afford it!

Not sure David Millar would agree with that!

I was thinking the same

I’ve only had 3 sets of Mavics ever, and all of them were 100% flawless, I still own 2 of the 3 sets, the third set I sold and regret it.

I like mine, replaced a Renn

.

They also make some great track training wheels.

This is from today. Test driving on Mavic Ellipse track wheels a mass start event track bike (or better said “an-alternative-to-give-mass-start-events-a-try-after-the-important-pursuit-without-having-to-carry-one-too-many-bikes-around-the-country” )

Your wheels and cranks use non-standard chainlines. Don’t you get lots of drivetrain noise and drag?

Actually your first comment is the likely answer. It’s the EUR/USD exchange rate. In not sure exactly where the Purchasing Power Parity would put the Fx right now, but it is a long way from the actual 1.48 or so that the Eur is currently trading at.

Because they make so few of them and they are pretty expensive to make. I know there is a ridiculous lead time for these pieces of bike bling. From what I am told, they are not really “production” pieces. Same thing with the io five spoke.

Only when the chain is not tightened properly

The wheels (Mavic Ellipse Track), crankset (FSA Carbon Pro Track, 144mm BCD, 170mm L, w/49T-1/8" track chainring), BB (Platinum Pro Track, 108 mm ISIS splined spindle) and 1/8"" chain (KMC 1/2" x 1/8", INOX S10) are all track components. The chain is PERFECTLY in line. If the chain is tightened properly the noise produced is normal.

I am glad we could convert this frame. He already raced this bike as a pursuit bike last month in the “Copa Federacion” (the National Cup series) in Mexico with very good results. He also raced a couple of mass start events in his Bianchi Concept which is a very nice frame for a Youth rider. The problem is that he is starting to travel alone to the events across the country. You can imagine how tough is in Mexico City’s airport for a 14 (soon to turn 15) year old carrying two bike cases plus his normal luggage.

We will see how he does in this weekend’s event in the scratch and points race of the same series in Mexico City’s olympic velodrome in his “new” bike.

I forgot to mention that the Mavic Ellipse can be fitted with two different size cogs at the same time (one at each side). This adds to its value as a track practice wheel.

Best wishes,

Sergio

I see, the frame is 130mm O.L.D.

Sounds like the travel is fun. I was just made aware of a 250M track in TJ, pretty close to my home relatively speaking.

Aren’t the track events gear restricted for him?

Yes, because the P2SL is an Al frame all you have to do is insert a properly sized washer at each side and flex it just a bit to make up for that less than 10mm. It works great.

That TJ track is not in the list of events for this year David and not many people down here knows about it. Not been able to see even a photo of it. I will probably be in TJ in a few days for business purposes. I am curious about the construction. If go there I will post some photos.

He is restricted to a 49x15 in both the pursuit and MS events.

Best of luck in LA!

Sergio

I think it’s just like any other component, it costs what people are willing to pay. It’s not produced in huge quantities so overstock isn’t a problem. Mavic just needs to convince the consumers that they will be better off spending money on that one wheel rather than something else that will likely give better benefits…you know, kind of like Zipp does.
