Because running in place will never get the same results as running from a lion.

The end result of running from a lion will always have the same outcome, treadmill or road. Good luck!
You don’t have to outrun the lion, just the guy beside you.
An outdoor run/ride has a finishing line. The trianer/treadmill doesn’t, it is like Zeno’s arrow paradox come true - Progression just seems impossible!
Somehow I am more into the trainer than the treadmill mind. Once when at Uni in Italy there was a storm on the day I had planned to go out for a longish ride so I sat on in the gym on the exercise bike for 3 hours…there were lakes of sweat on the floor around me! Since then I’ve tried to keep my trainer sessions as technical, intense and short as possible!
Treadmiil and trainer workouts don’t have to be long. They can be controlled and you can achieve the same result with a hard treadmill or trainer ride as you do running or biking outside for a few hours. If you look at the pro’s workouts a lot of them use these tools to narrow in on a specific workout. I know it sucks but in the end it may payoff for you!

Sadly, I probably couldn’t do either these days.
As for the OP, I don’t mind the trainer or treadmill for some stuff. I just don’t want to be in the position where that’s the only option I ever have.
