Why does CA get a plastic bag ban, and I get this?

Just made a quick stop at the grocery store for a few items, usually I have some sort of reusable bag with me but this stop wasn’t planned. Here’s what I bought.

A dozen eggs
Bottle of wine
2 8oz cans of tomato sauce
Can of diced tomatoes
small bag of candy
cottage cheese

These 7 items took an amazing 6 plastic bags for the clerk to package them up. I was chatting with the cashier while the bagger did this or I would have stopped the young lady. I paid, went to grab my order and was like WTF! Maybe CA wouldn’t need a ban if we simply filled the stupid bags in the first place. I made some irritated noise about the amount of bags as I tried to sort out what the bagger had done, in return I got a “have a nice day sir” from the back of her head as she started bagging the next order, one item per bag again.

People bitch about stupid rules and laws, maybe we should just bitch about the stupid instead.

A bit passive-aggressive?

People bitch about lots of stupid things. Your post is an example of that.

Grocery baggers no longer need to know jack to bag groceries. Plastic bags have not structure and are limp. Obviously I am old. I spent 3 years, ages 15-17 bagging groceries in brown paper bags. Then there was actually skill and art involved. You built structure to the bag by how you positioned and loaded the bag. A heavy load got a double bag. This was in the day when the checkout person had to key in each item, that had a price stamped on it.

My how times have changed. Then two full grocery carts of groceries went out the door for $100. I would marvel that someone could spend that much on food!!

i’m assuming you walked to the supermarket, right? and that it was at least 3 miles from your house, uphill both ways?

Umm, you don’t take your own reusable bags?

Don’t forget, plastic bags were introduced as a way to “save the planet”.

Hey, man, you don’t like plastic grocery bags? Don’t fucking use them.

I just bought 1,000 of them btw. I take them with me to the grocery store, use them once and throw them out.

Good idea, reusing bacteria laden grocery bags is a really great way to recycle your food into a 2 sided liquid propulsion system.

I think the bags are sponsored in such a way that both the grocery store and the bagger get commission on how many bags they shell out. If you’re that concerned, I’d suggest that you spend the extra $0.99 on a new, reusable bag and stick it to the man.

If you really cared, maybe you would have your free range chickens pick the grapes and tomato and milk the cow. But evidently some people just don’t care about the environment. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to bath in the Hudson. Good day to you, fine sir.

My brother did the NYC tri. At the end of the race his girlfriend peeled a bunch of black shit from the Hudson off his face. On the upside his swim time was about half of it’s normal time.

Nope, I rode my 10 speed bicycle until I got a car. 1 mile to school, 1 mile to work, 1 mile to home. Happened to be gorgeous southern california, so no snow, only uphill going home. Lived in nirvana.

Somewhere out there there is someone bitching about how the clerk put two things in one bag. This is why I’m not sure I would last long running any business that dealt with the general public, no matter wht you do someone will be pissed about it.

I’ve had the same reusable bag in my backpack for about two years now (*), and shop every day (I don’t drive). Nobody in my household has gotten sick from the “bag vector”. Before today I’ve actually never heard that that may be a problem.

I guess you also have a million bottles of hand sanitizer just in your car, right? I’m a firm believer that exposure to germs (within limits, obviously. Once the bag starts to smell funky I’ll make sure to throw it out, I promise) actually improves your resistance.

(*) Ontario peeps: the green “One bag, One planet” LCBO bags are great. They’re made to handle heavy loads (booze  and last way longer than anything else I’ve used.

Grocery baggers no longer need to know jack to bag groceries.

It is a lost art.

I’ve read that the green (reusable) bags become havens for hazardous germs and bacteria.

Plastic bags are better for the environment than paper and reusable bags unless you reuse the bags 94 to 1,899 times.

“For example, a shopper would need to reuse the same cotton tote 350 times before it caused less fresh water aquatic ecotoxicity than all of the plastic bags that it would replace over this period. Given the improbability that the same cotton tote would last that long (its expected life is 52 reuses), in most cases plastic bags will have less environmental impact.”
