saying someone is being stupid is not the same thing as saying they are stupid.

That’s stupid.
He’s such a dumbass.
No. He’s being a dumbass.
No. He’s being a dumbass.
Dude! Why did you call veganerd a dumbass???
Haha you all made me laugh!
Really though…
Yeah, but he’s ALWAYS being a dumbass.
You’re being a dumbass on purpose.
You sure?
Why are donkey’s either Smart or Dumb… yet we never refer to any other animal in that way… Go ahead call someone a Smartelephant or a Dumbcat… it just doesn’t seem to work.

.
Maybe they don’t understand it because they are stupid.
He’s a stupid dumbass.
But acting stupid is also pretty good evidence of being stupid.

On many occasions, I’ve wanted to tell my girlfriend that she is “being a bitch”, but I haven’t done it because I know she will hear “you’re a bitch”. Not the same thing.
But acting stupid is also pretty good evidence of being stupid.
Everyone acts stupidly sometimes
.
How about “When you post here, you sound like a complete asshole. Every time. All the time.”
Am I calling that person an asshole? At what point does their assholish behavior make them an asshole?
Isn’t that the same when saying “don’t act like a bitch?”

That’s definitely closer to the line. Do you not agree that there is a distinction?
Depends on the percentage of time behaving like an asshole/bitch/whatever.
If a person only occasionally behaves like an asshole/bitch/whatever then the distinction is there.
Eventually, though, if that behavior happens all the time, then that distinction goes away.
