Why do "Paulo" posts

…cause so much emotion on ST? Thinking this after reading the latest Paulo vs h2ofun battle.

St’er’s either love or hate the guy. There are two camps:

  1. the Paulo groupies, bent over and greased up and posting how Paulo “has outdone himself again”, even when he makes the most irrelevant, abnoxious smart ass one liners that are totally insignificant to the original post.

  2. the Paulo haters, who sh*t on the guy when he does come up with something significant, relevant and very interesting. And he actually does once in awhile.

I guess there is a third group, people like me who neither love or hate the guy, but just can’t understand the two camps. Never met the guy. Totally neutral. I’ve been slammed by him on the board, but so what, can’t hold a grudge against an online personality.

Any post on ST that has “Paulo” on it is bound to get mega hits and stir up a lot of emotion. Just curious why?

It was interesting to see Dev and Paulo going at it today.

what’s a board without a bit of excitement and personality behind the posts, paulo and h2ofun’s posts are both entertaining for their own reasons. both bring something worthwhile to the board, just maybe not in quite every post…

Well I guess those humility bypass operations are not cheap, and being Portuguese, ergo completely classless, he feels a constant need to let us know that his money was well spent.

I like Paulo because he raced me in a duathlon, and we had a great time. He is a great guy in person, I can’t understand why people get all excited what he types on a message board. This place is here for our enjoyment. People are just too serious around here.

Darn tootin’ we’re serious here, which is why I’ve got a problem with your new sig line - you can’t invoke St. Khai’s name until you train AND race like him. Blasphemer!

The whole reason I started the thread was to show what seems to be his true presonality.

As usual, I, or others, post a thread to try and give some input to others to think about.
Nothing more, nothing less. And as usual, here comes Paulo having to make a negative post in
what seems to be EVERY thread someone posts. And folks tell me I am on the computer too much.

It just gets so so old with his personal attacks. Say what you want about swimfan, at least he did not
personally attack others, and followed the rules. How some can get away with the personal attacks
I guess I will never understand, other than it gets ST hits.

So, I have nothing against the few who just love to attack me and read negatives, or what they call bragging
into my posts. I am proud of what I have worked hard for since I do not have the ST genetics, and like
to talk about it! No different that some posts about their new bikes, or sex life, or spouse issues,
or race results, or, or ,or.

So, as I always say, I am so honored that a few have taken it upon themselves to be my mother, and try to fix me.

Dave

Yeah, Erik. You need to redeem yourself… sign up for the triple T, train minimally, then do it on a fixie. Then you can earn that tagline!

Jodi

Jodi, I’m afraid he’s not that dumb :-(.

It’s not dumb…

It’s grabbing this life by the horns

Going into this sport with reckless abandon

Showing the world how tough you can be

And giving the ST world an underdog…

Think we can get Khai to do the Triple T on a fixie?

Jodi

Only if BottomFeeder is my partner.

Not my life partner, racing partner BTW

In the words of Mitch Hedberg…

“I played in a death-metal band. People either loved us or hated us. Or they thought we were OK.”

Is there anything else? I guess you either love Paulo, hate him, or are just sort of in the middle and don’t care. Sorry if this was a smart ass response, but I figured some would appreciate the Mitch Hedberg quote.

But… you do have a point, I’m in the third camp and have been trying to figure out the attraction to this guy. Is he a pro or something? I honestly know nothing about him.

What bothers me is how some people, who would never be rude to you in person, get so obnoxious once they sit down at a keyboard. I suspect that if the same discussions took place in person, these people would be much more civil (if for no other reason than some of these Internet bullies would be too frightened to open their mouths). It’s pretty cowardly when you think about it. It you wouldn’t say it to the person’s face, then don’t say it while hiding behind a computer screen.

well, this is probably the first “paulo” post i’ve clicked on. my bigger problem is the posts that start with a good topic (could be anything from pacing in races to nutrition to, well, to anything) that are followed by an arrogant post from paulo. this is usually followed by around 1/3 of the posts being about paulo instead of the original topic. It’s not as bad as the frank day/pc hijacks, but it can be pretty bad.

I’m in the 3rd party mentioned above, but your statement has proposed a magic question.

Paulo makes me laugh. He can be abrasive, but let’s be honest for a moment. There are a lot of ridiculous things posted here. I stayed away from the forum for 6 or 8 months (due to a lack of training and interest in triathlon), and when I came back a few weeks ago, I saw that I hadn’t missed a thing. It’s the same stuff posted over and over again. Many times when Paulo gets smart, I gather that it’s because it’s a repetitive post or one in which the original logic is flawed, and he just points that out in typical Paulo-like form. That has resulted in a group that doesn’t like him, which fuels him all the more. I think he’s refreshing – he makes me take myself and my involvement in the sport less serious. Which I think is something we could all use.
