It is not good that I was happy with my half marathon today when it was 20 seconds per mile slower than a very disappointing performance at the same race last year.
I am really having a much harder time in the heat for both training and racing than I used to. That is probably not good either, since I live in South Florida.
Slowtwitch sages no doubt have a solution to this problem. Before anyone asks, I am certain that raising my seat height won’t do it.
It’s because you are not going fast enough. Going fast is your choice and you must support it with training. When you get to be around 57-58 years old, slowing down is inevitable (this is not to say that there are not some very fast dudes in the 55-59 AG) but this is when slowing down happens to many people. If you are younger than 57, going faster and PR’ ing is within your ability. I’m 43 and I continue to get faster…nothing dramatic, but good enough for me.
Do what I did, hire a coach. She looked at my past results, and what I was doing recently, and after careful analysis suggested I take two weeks off, then quit. It’s working so far… no races, no slower times. ;^)
