Black has to be the WORST color for riding in the desert. I guess they hide your balls better and the occassional chain grease, and you can come home with salt stains all over and make people go “yuck”, but otherwise it might be nice to have a pair of white or yellow or chrome reflective. Maybe Cippo has some hand-me-downs I could get.
Reminds me, where do I get a pair with the inflation pump on the front from the movie “Dodgeball”?
possibly the reason why the women on our team were very vocal about not making our top piece not a light color… the old one was apparently a tad revealing…
Definitely that one. Dark-colored lycra, it takes a lot more abuse and you can use a thinner fabric/weave before it goes see-through on you. White, you pretty much need to have it significantly lined in order to keep within local standards of decency.
I remember one of the TDF teams a few years back had white shorts. Besides the dirt and grime I do remember seeing a post race photo of them after they had sweated all day in them. Left nothing to the imagination. Almost like wearing saran wrap.
For day in, day out use, black is your best idea, for the same reason black handlebar tape is the best:
It doesn’t show dirt and grease - -
When you fiddle with your chain or derailleur, you get grease and grime on your hands. That grease and grime is going to end up on your handlebar tape, and on your shorts.
It’s the same reason hillbillies shouldn’t wear long sleave shirts.
Meanwhile, those of us who are extreme fashion plates have shorts in a variety of colors. I may not be fast, but I look good!!
I’ve gotta say that darker shorts are better. Black, blue, red, maybe even a green. I have a pair of blue Castellis, that I’m wearing right now as a matter of fact, and a pair of sliver ones. The silver ones are pretty cool looking, but I only wear them if I’m riding in the dark. If any sweat or water gets on them, I might as well not be wearing anything. In hot weather I often splash water on my head while riding. It’s very effective if I want the person riding behind me to have a clear view of my crack.

Yes, but are you wearing any underwear?
“If any sweat or water gets on them, I might as well not be wearing anything.”
That would be Bay to Breakers…

Just say “no” to crack and other drugs…
I like being colorful, but it’s tough because brightly colored bike shorts get funky looking long before they’re worn out. It’s OK, I try to look good to make up for being slow. Also, speed and visibility are your allies in the fight for sufvival on the roads.
