Boy oh boy does this date me I guess…I remember when we all used to run in speedos, even at IMs. I have done all 16 of my IM runs in a speedo, but I never really felt out of place until CdA…I think I was the only one! Where have you all gone? After the bike, my package is tired of the tri shorts. It took lees than 10 seconds to change into freedom.
The ITU has slowly banned the old style of uniforms. No speedos allowed for the men anymore. And two piece tops must come down level with the bottoms (no bare midriffs). So that may be part of it.
Power Lycra. It really works, and I like Emilio’s stuff the best.
No need to defuzz too close to your junk; or if you dont defuzz, you dont look like you are smuggling Elpaka’s (and Im not talking about the bulge part)
LOL. That’s true for at least this triathlete. I do still have my Pearl Izumi tri brief. I told my wife that when I fit into as good as I did 10 years ago, I’ll race a sprint wearing it.
I think I’m one of the last holdouts in northern ohio who still races in a speedo. Been racing 22 years and a speedo is all I’ve ever worn. Did my first xterra in a speedo (that turned out to be a mistake). In duathlons 15 years ago 25% of the guys wore speedos.
I was rocking a speedo at the Graeagle triathlon last weekend. Its kind of a joke that my swim team gave me last year (its pink). I like it though. Reminds me of the old days. Its two for two so far.
I noticed at Master’s swim practice last night that I was the only guy in Speedos! A few guys had jammers on and 2 guys had the oversized square drag suits on. If guys are not wearing them in the pool, what are the odds of them wearing them in a race?
All it took for me was one test triathlon in a protoype Sugoi Power Lycra tri short back in 1998, when I was working for Sugoi and that was it for me. I was “retired” by that time, but I came to the conclusion that well designed tri-shorts made from the right material were a way better option than the speedo for a several reasons.
More comfortable all around
More muscle support
If the right material is used they’re warmer when you need more warmth and cooler when you need to be cooler
Swim/bike/run friendly
More modest
More coverage = less issues with sun exposure
Despite my Old School leanings, I would never go back to racing in a speedo. However, I respect Old Schoolers like yourself who are keeping the look alive.
However, there are some holdouts, and when the run by the Fleet Feet aid station at the Chicago Tri there is a dedicated group of electric lemonade drinking girls waiting to rate them (1-10) with cards…
Let me get this straight: You wore tri shorts for the bike, then changed into speedos for the run?
**
You know they’re swim suits, right? Why not change into running shorts? Or do you run in speedos in training?
I am guessing that you didn’t want to deprive the assorted throngs of the full glory of you hotness, right?
Racing the speedo was more comfortable, cooler, and faster on the swim bike and run…
wear them under the wetsuit…on the bike with just the speedo…throw on the cropped singlet with a number on the run…
these f’ing tri shorts tops are hot and uncomfortable to me…and I have tried all of them…and I think the tri suits looked competely dorky…triwear universally sucks these days…who designs this stuff?
all this wet clingy lycra on my body feels like crap…especially on a hot run…
and my fiancee has actually told me I look good in the speedo’s…just dont wear them after the race to the awards ceremony…
I would love to see them make a comeback…
if it was good enough for the big 4 and the Pigman it was good enough for me…
or race car driving, or rock climbing, or just regular biking, or anything else on earth
seeing men in two piece bathing suit looking things is just appealing to no one. I don’t even understand why people wear that crap unless they are actually selling sponsor space on their shirts
Do you fully understand the chaf risk of running an IM run in running shorts…at least it would gobble me up! My last few IM runs I’ve done in my Oomph Gordo. In fact the Gordo was designed specifically to run in (could swim too I suppose ;-)…you do know that, right. Benefits are: Great support, nothing to chaf, freedom from the skanked tri shorts after 112 miles, a cooling sensation, a trip down memory lane … and you might be right about the glory of my hotness (glad to know there is a fan out there). Unfortunately I’ve never been confused with Faris.
