Ok, I’ve done about 5-10 track WOs this season and not been sore in the Achilles area for most of them. The Achilles is something I have had problems with. I ran a 20K race on this last Saturday with no soreness at all. But after warming up on Tuesday in the first warm day of the year (90 degrees) I find myself sore in the Achilles area after only 16 minutes of easy, gradual running. How can this be? This isn’t a one time thing. I find this tends to happen a lot and that in general I feel less flexible all over. I would think, if anything, the AT, etc would be more supple and flexible in the heat and therefore harder to stress. Is this not so?
Could the blood be directed less to the muscles and more at the skin to release heat causing the muscles to be less flexible? (I just thought of that as I was typing.)
luids help flush out acid and toxins. in the heat your body looses so much fluid. you need to drink additional and stretch additionally to get the acid and toxins flushed. this is my initial guess on your issue. try drinking more and stretching more.
remember the heat creates significant stress on the cardio system and muscles. it takes time to adapt, and you need to take it slow and not get upset if your times are a bit slower, etc. this is a transition time.
Thanks. That was my initial thinking too after the whole WO was done. However, I felt sore just after being warmed up and I know I was hydrated. I also made sure to run slower than my goal time due to the heat, but that doesn’t make a difference since, like I said, I was sore before any of the speedwork.
well if you were sore before you even got started then that sounds like delay onset muscle sorness. which also tells me you need some amino acids in your nutrition and potentially some rest. how are you sleeping? eating–specifically are you getting enough protein in your recovery meals? anything different going on outside of training? all of this could be a factor.
that makes a little more sense. Since the 20K, I’ve been going full bore and been a victim to my fancy training log…I like to see those bars get higher! (on the bar graph, that is.) Today is going to be a much needed rest day for me. Also, I’m not sure if I’ve hit the protein much since then. I think you got it.
