I have no doubt that there are many people who have overcome great tragedy and/or hardship to get themselves to the start line of an Ironman. To finish that Ironman, for them ,is a huge thing and the personal satisfaction is just and should be enjoyed.Sometimes though,in some quarters, there is this tendency to go completely over-the-top and act like they have reached some holier than thou plane of existence that we all must constantly acknowledge. That gets old really quickly.
I’ve done a few Ironman’s in my time and yes I’ve worn the outfits but I believe there is a definite elitist attitude creeping into our sport. That is what I don’t get.
Oh,and I also don’t get why people sprint the last 50 meters of the Ironman when they have been walking most of the evening. Why don’t they walk or jog down the finish chute and take the time to really appreciate where they are and what they have done?
Simple, I have a drawer of race tees which includes an IM Finisher which I randomly wear when I go to the gym (I’ve been riding the spin bike in the gym 5 days/ week while getting outside only once a week until it warms up). When the IM tee reaches the top of the pile it is worn. That is why I wear it. Stop hatin’.
Why don’t they walk or jog down the finish chute and take the time to really appreciate where they are and what they have done?

+1. i spend the last 10-20m of every race looking around and making sure theres nobody within distance before jogging it in and getting a nice finishers photo

Lost my first reply, let me try again…
I’m a 50yo, BOPer 14 time marathoner. Most finished between 4:20 and 5:30. Sometimes, I’ve had to walk and fight cramps for 6 miles, but I’ve been proud of every finish and I’ve always been able to muster something up that resembles running for the finish. I can’t imagine walking across the finish line, crawling maybe, but not walking.
I’m now training for my first 140.6, 6th tri, I hope to finish between 13 and 14 hours, but I will be very prowd of any finish. I’ll probably wear my medal for at least 2 days, if its a nice race T, I’ll buy an extra from the RD and wear them regularly. I might even get one of those mdot stickers to put next to my 26.2 sticker. Then i’ll start training for my next IM. Everyone should be proud of their accomplishments even if one person’s might be a podiums spot and anothers a finish.

Don’t be That Guy man. Don’t do it.
Right now it might not be clear why, but one day, it will.
guys like you are f"""ing stupid. You should not be allowed to run marathons if your times suck! get over yourself.
you’re probably one of those who make fun of couch potatoes… If entry in a race gets people out the door, on the road, or in the pool lets celebrate, not make fun of them.
By the way, if you didn’t win your last race, they hang it up and sell the bike.
“Oh christ, next you will want to buy a larger home or a “fancy car” just to prove that you are smart and work hard to earn nice things.”
Frankly I don’t see that happening. Since he spelled the word “proud” p-r-o-w-d I have to believe that he’s not buying anything that will prove how smart he is.

I agree, lets celebrate their efforts, and stick to making fun of the people who wear their medal for two days and wear their IM finisher’s shirt to spin class.

Tiki,
I do think I get what you’re saying… I’d not generally wear a medal for 2 days. Generally it comes off in the car. Hey but when I complete my first IM distance race I’m going to be happy about it, I might as well have a medal around the neck. Most of my running buddies think I am crazy for doing this so they will want to see it. You can smirk if you want I won’t mind.
The shirt is harder to understand. There are a lot of “rules” about the shirt. The main one, in my thinking, I can’t wear it if I don’t finish, but I don’t excited if others do. Your saying I can’t wear it when working out, so when do people wear their shirts? Especially the nice ones that are tech shirts. I’m not going to waste those. I also met my current running group wearing a race T at the Y which prompted them to ask about the race. I saw a lady wearing a tri race shirt in spin class and it gave me the opportunity to ask about the race. It seems like wearing the shirt promotes the sport. And buying an extra tech shirt for $10 after the race from the RD has been a great value. They’re glad to get rid of them.
Do people get upset about people riding a nice bike if they are slow (never did know how slow was defined)
Slow is anyone below the median.
**When people wear their finishers medal **
Finisher medals are for 6-year-old soccer players. Actually, they shouldn’t get them either.
Leave their number on ( body marking)
Guilty at times but I’m incapable of taking a proper shower.
Run harder at the finish line
The Greeks ran harder at the finish. So do I.
Wear “finisher IM stuff”
Doesn’t bother me.
**Unless you know them how do you know their motives, life story, motivation. **
Shouldn’t we feel good that they tri-ed
I’m supposed to feel good about every person who does a triathlon? What about the drifters and drafters and child molesters?
