My guess - Starbuck is a Being of Light. if you remember the original series, the Beings of Light were sort of angels. And she’s clearly the Angel of Death.
Ok. I’m a BSG newbie. I just watched the “cliff notes” yesterday and tuned in for the episodes last night.
So, why can’t Starbuck be a Cylon? From what little I know, isn’t that what happens to them when they die? Don’t they get “reincarnated” or “downloaded” into another body?
The show has made it pretty clear from early on that there are 12 Cylon models, the 7 that we knew early on that were the “bad guys”, and then 5 others that were fundamentally different. If they went back on that and say now whoops, fooled you, there were really 13, then I don’t think the fans would be too happy. Even the producers/creators continually have said there are only 12. Starbuck has to be something else.
I suppose the drama is over about revealing the remaining Cylons, too. It would be kind of anti-climactic for Starbuck to be one. She needs to be something else to carry the dramatic tension forward.

Perhaps an Angel that not a destroyer as we think but a cleanser? Did Starbuck cleanse earth 2K years ago? Because someone / something did.
I think you are right, the drama now is 1. what/who is Starbuck, and 2. where are they going to go. I almost forget that the rest of the Cylon fleet is out there wanting to exterminate the “humans”. Also, if they (the good guys) are humans, and Cylons were on Earth, then what are we?
Well, in some episode (season 1 or 2), I don’t remember if it was the doctor (Cottle?) or Baltar explained that humans ONLY had to blood types - A and B and that the cylons had some other type of blood ( O ). So, you do the math
I wonder if that vortex that Starbuck got sucked into was a wormhole and that when she arrived on Earth it was 2,000 years ago and she did something to start the holocaust. Then she somehow re-entered the wormhole with a new and different Viper and got zapped back into her present time. There’s only one Starbuck and she’s human but she ended up to two time periods.
How about there is another “higher” power, maybe the original inhabitants of the homeworld prior to the colonial diaspora, overseeing everything. They are the ones that caused the 5 to be reborn and somehow duplicated Starbuck.
