First world problems… I was in a 16-deep and very slow-moving line at Starbucks this morning. When I was about number 12 in line, a young lady a couple spots behind me said “oh, he’s motioning for us to join him.” She and her friend (who was in line with the speaker) then leapt up to join a guy they knew who was at about number four in line. Then, one of the young ladies had the balls to order multiple drinks for friends who had texted her their orders, further delaying everyone behind her.
Who’s the bigger douche? The cutters or the invitor?
Is cutting like that un-Christian? Because each of the three had an ID badge clipped to their clothes indicating that they work at the mega-church in the area, and one of the cutters had a black baseball cap with huge, white block letters spelling “JESUS” on it. I know that’s not apropos of anything, really, I just thought it was odd.

If you are really bothered by people cutting in front of you, then you should speak up and let your concern be known. Of course, most people choose to keep quiet in order to avoid a face to face confrontation. When people are isolated from other people such as in a car, then people start to make some noise. For example, if one motorist pulls a move that another motorist finds unaccectiple, then unhappy motorist will make some noise because such a person feels that they have a suit of armor (car) were they are isolated from face to face contact, therefore, road range takes place. On the other hand, I have never heard of line rage at the supermarket or coffee shop line, because most people don’t want to start a face to face confrontation for the reasons I mentioned.
Would you rather she just stepped out of line and texted the guy in 4th her orders? Same result.
I see your point, but it would be the same result minus the overt display of disrespect for the people around them, which is what qualifies as “douche” in my mind.
So i assume you never had someone hold a place in line for you? If so, you are the exception and not the rule…
Never? Probably not. Certainly never in my adult life though.
Last weekend we brought the kids to the mall to see Santa. Line was more than an hour long so the girlfriend stayed in line while I brought the kids shopping. When it was nearly our turn she texted and we bypassed everyone to the front.
You’ve never done anything like that? I don’t see a problem with it.

Could that be because people like me pick their battles? Causing a scene at a Starbucks is different than other situations in which a expressed reaction would be warranted, like a child beating.
I hear you on the “road rage because they feel isolated and protected” point. That’s one of the reasons I think people are nasty, brutish, and short (see what I did there?). It’s similar to the Internet - take away people’s accountability and many of them become raging cunts.

If the guy was holding a place for them, then why didn’t they immediately join him? Rather, they joined the back of the line then cut.
On the other hand, I don’t have a problem with what you did. But you didn’t join the back of the line and then jump to the front when invited.
There are very few bright-line rules that can be appropriately applied across the board, so of course there are exceptions.
In your case, all that was done was to place a single person in line, right? I.e., the person who was, for all intents and purposes, in line was your child, not you, your girlfriend, and your child. The goal was to put one butt in one lap, have a (hopefully) brief conversation with Santa, and snap a pic. Done.
In my case, it was to place two people in line, one of whom actually represented multiple people due to her holding her friends’ orders.
The person who invites the cutters to come up front is more at fault. If you think the people in back have a greater claim than other people in line, then just switch places with them. But, you don’t have the line’s permission to just push everyone back a few places by letting someone join you. Of course, different lines have different cultures. Some are more chill than others. If someone in an airport line is desperately trying to avoid missing a flight (or at least you believe their claims to that effect), that’s understandable. But, there is no emergency at Starbucks.
Ok, lets get to the nuts of this thing. so your best friend or spouse comes through the door unannounced and surprising you. You just tell them to get to the back of the line? Here you will find your answer to your pain….
On Monday morning I was waiting in line to buy a Metro Card. The line formed a few feet away from the front of the machines to allow the morning subway commuters an aisle way to pass through to the turnstiles. Not realizing the front of the line actually formed a few feet way, an Asian girl, about 24-ish, walks right up to the machine in the number two position. The line erupted in protest and I thought she’d get her throat ripped-out. She quickly moved to the end of the line.
Equal douchebaggery. Holding a place while part of your group does something else is one thing. Inviting people in the back of the line to cut into the front of the line is something different. Giving that invitation and accepting it both indicate that you think you and your friends are more important than the rest of those in line.

If you want to talk to them in line you go to the back of the line with them

If my best friend comes in, he gets in the back of the line, and I would’t have to ask him to do so.
If it’s your spouse, I’d tend to see that as different, because you and your spouse are a couple.
I’ve been the guy in line asked if he wanted to come up front. It made me uncomfortable just being asked, and I quickly said I would stay where I was. It’s just a coffee line. Why do I need to annoy and disrespect a bunch of people to get my drink 2 minutes quicker?
