I would say Luke Bell or Faris al Sultan
.
Lance Armstrong, Mike Tyson … ?
Concerning Tris, Simon Lessing IMHO
ha,
I mean of the guys who are currently racing Ironman
.
Luke Bell is going to win IM Australia this year =)
Lets see:
Clas Bjorling
Bjorn Andersson
Luke Mckenzie
Terenzo Bozzone (hasn’t raced one but went 3:59 at a HIM and he’s only 19)
.
Macca.
With the new ride, Mr. Tibbs will smoke the field.
Macca.
Unless I’m mistaken, Macca’s won several IM’s. Heck, he went sub 8 at Roth.
Is Tibbs the new Bjorn?
Is Tibbs the new Bjorn?
Yup, Bjorn Borg!

Frank
since the bike is so new shouldn’t it be Bjorn Yesterday or Bjorn on the 4th of January.
Sergio!!!

Luke Bell: 5th in Kona…<<
Yes, from 5th to a stretcher. We’ll see what this year brings.
Francois is correct. Al-Sultan shows up mainly to races where the competition is Kona “podium-like”. If he cherry picked a tier 3 M-Dot race, he’d have a few wins under his belt.
Agreed - I think these two are the best who have not won one absolutly yet.
I know that Simon Lessing has one won - with an astouning performance at IM LP last year. I still think that he is going to turn the IM racing scene upside-down when he puts it all together against a deep field. All the top guys admit that he is the one that scares them the most.

You are right…for the moment!!!
But the question was “who’s the best athlete who hasn’t won an ironman yet”…and sergio meets all the conditions.

Which IM events have fields that are typically “more Kona podium like”. Roth is the only one I can think of and it is not an official IM and it gets diluted by one of those other european ones, forget which. As more and more IM get added to the schedule the dilution is only going to get worse. Kona is the only race that is “Kona podium like” as far as I know (except for LFT, which is also not an IM, even IM distance).

Sedi, you have got to be the first Sérgio Marques groupie! Even Klep,me and the other guys from the team treat him like SH*T! :-)))
Good point, Frank
Generally, the fields at many of the top IM races are weaker now than they were, 10 even 5 years ago. This is due, as you pointed out, from the dilution factor as they ad more IM races around the world.
I would even venture that the field in Kona is weaker then it really should/could be as a number of top Long Distance specialists focus on wins at a few of the regional IM races and then skip Kona completely. It makes sense, as the prize purse at IMH is VERY top heavy.
