Hey all, I’m considering replacing an older disk wheel. Didn’t find much of anything in the archives concerning Corima disks. Corima has a pretty good reputation in the wheel biz. Their disks are comparable in weight to a Zipp. So if you’ve ridden one, what are your impressions? Reliability? Customer support? Durability?
I used one for a year, worked well but I got rid of it because I did not like the braking surface, it was very noisy, even with carbon pads. I would check the customer support in the US for this wheel first, as I am not sure if they have a distributor here.
Also, check out the all carbon HED disc, which is just as light.
I bought one off ebay last year for $500, turns out it was Steve Larsens ! Good wheel, I’m very happy with it. I weighed it at 960 grams even lighter than they claim. They also make a clincher version, you can’t put much pressure in those.
Sold a few over the years. Good wheel, not much company support though. Nytro (Xlab) whomever used to import, then went to Sinclair. Best best is Hed, Zipp, Renn or other USA based companies.
I still prefer the Hed disc over all others. Great product and Anne and Steve Hed stand behind everything they sell.
I bought one second hand from a racer in Boulder this past season. No complaints. I raced on a Zipp 909 set up last year and I honestly couldn’t tell any difference.
Although I have never ridden a Renn disc, I would strongly consider getting one if I were in the market now. Great customer service, price, and they have two new discs coming out this Spring that look really cool (and lightweight, etc.).
I agree with the other poster about staying with “local” wheels for service issues although I haven’t had any problems yet.
I have had a disc and aero front wheel on one of my bikes since 1997. Also used to have a set of 4-spokes. Nice wheels, never had any problems. Braking is a little loud. Airo International used to be the US distributor. Now it’s Sinclair. I also used to have a custom Corima Puma in which I dealt w/ Corima and customer service was very good. But that was a while ago. Corima would be a good choice but, you could be safe and go Zipp, Hed, Renn as already stated in the post’s above.
I’ve had several discs, including a Corima ('97/98), which I bought after borrowing a friends Zipp. Always found the Zipp a little stiffer laterally, which is why i’m back on Zipp.
