It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything; I’m mostly just a lurker-cyclist. However, I have started running to do more with my duathlete girlfriend, and I plan to do my first tri in January. I’ve been good so far, but I just got some wierd pain today that I’m not sure whether to blame on the cycling or the running. Here it goes:
I’ve been a cyclist for a while and I just started doing heavy miles again after a few weeks off with bronchitis. The training plan I put myself has me biking long on Fri/Sat/Sun with an easy ride/run on Monday and easy-to-tempo runs on Tuesday and Wed., Thursdays are off. I’ve only been running for about 2 months so this could be an overuse injury. I felt good (if more sore than when i just ride) on the first week but this thursday I did my 5hrs a bit too hard on too little food and felt really sore the next day. I took the next day off, but stood around all day watch my g/f race and then spent more time on my feet shopping, which kept the pain in my legs alive. I basically felt really stiff and sore with a fair amount of that pain in my shins and the middle of my quads. Sunday I only rode 3hrs indoors and felt fine. Today I rode the trainer for 1 1/2 hours, again fine, but when I went running on the trails the pain came on strong.
It started out with a pain in the middle my quads and quickly went to the almost the whole leg with some concentrated pain at the outside of my shins and the outsides of my feet. It hurt to run for a while and then it got worse, so I had to start walking. It was pretty cold outside and it hurt to touch my shin bones with any pressure.
Now, some other admissions/info:
-
I ran two years ago in a lightweight, neutral trainer for a summer, but I was fit this year with a stability shoe. The stability felt weird and the one I settled with (Asics Kayano) gave me knee pain on the first run, so I switched for a neutral, cushioned shoe (Brooks Glycerin 4). The shoe felt great for the past 6 runs, but the outside of my feet really hurt.

I’ve gone from zero running to 3x a week at about an hour per run (cycling mentality maybe). I’ve got no problem running this long and I’m getting fast quickly. I like block training, and cycling races are my priority, so I want to fit in the running where it won’t mess with weekend races.

I’ve gone from zero cycling (for the past 3 weeks) to a 5 hour week of commuting to a 13-15hr week. That said, I’ve been cycling for 7 years heavily and have had no problem doing this in the past.
-
I’m a lightweight guy (6’0", 140lbs) that’s a bit knock-kneed and I land on the front of my heal/midfoot.
-
I do a fair amount of standing nowadays (4hrs a day 4x a week - culinary school)
The plan for tonight is to massage the legs a lot which has helped whenever I get shin soreness from cycling or standing too much, so I’ll update. Thanks for any help you guys can offer.
