I think your point is correct. We ‘tire’ of presidents. So those that have a 2nd term tend not to campaign for a successor due to their negatives.
But, your examples are flawed. Carter, Ford and Bush 41 lost their campaigns for a 2nd term (Ford was never elected to a 1st term either) so they never had a 2nd term. Nixon had the ultimate baggage as he resigned in his 2nd term.
