Who watches (or will be watching) the Watchmen?

Wow, I never thought the hype machine could get this jacked up for this movie. Being a fan of the comic, but one that heard about it long after it was published, I can’t believe the wide exposure this movie’s opening is getting.

That being said, I can’t wait. Long live the squid! (and no, not you Squid).

The chic with the big boobs and black leather looks interesting for sure.

I don’t have any interest in this movie.

Oddly enough I LOVE movie trailers and watch LOTS of them, though I rarely make it to the movies.

Even from just the trailer I couldn’t get into this one.

Also…IF the comic/graphic novel was SOOOO good, why is it that NO ONE I have talked to has ever heard of it til now? It was written what? 20 years ago?

I’m not saying it’s going to be a good or bad movie, since I don’t know…but it’s just not for me.

I have a friend who is tied pretty well to the industry and the inside scoop is that it is worth watching in the theaters.

How old are you? Are the people you talk to hipster-ish?

Watchmen is like Oldboy. It actually IS that good, but it’s the highest (most known) level of “obscure” cool. If you’ve seen and love it, instant cred. The earlier you can convince someone you saw it (like the rumored early '04 bootlegs of Oldboy or the idiots who say they read it in Japanese in the 90s), the cooler you are. They both appeal to a certain segment of the “I’m cooler than you because I listen to whatever semi-obscure band/read whatever semi-obscure comic” set. I have a good friend who is like that, so I heard about Watchmen back when “From Hell” came out and he was gushing about Alan Moore. So I was about 15 years late to the party…

I don’t know how they’re going to tie it together without the squid. That being said, it will be my first theater movie since Quantam of Solace.

I just read it a couple years ago, and I had heard about it a few years prior. Well, heard about it and listened or was interested I guess I should say. After reading it, I immediately wished I had read it sooner. About to read it again. It’s amazing how a story so appropriate for the political climate 20 odd years ago has again become relevant. But I guess that’s the way it is with all great works, their relevance spans time.

gotcha…

For the record I’m in my 30’s and do “computer work” on a college campus…so…

  1. I’m surrounded by nerds (using that term in a good way
  2. Age range of the staff is 19 (some student help) up to about late 40’s…so I would have THOUGHT I had the age and demo covered.

I thought wrong

If your neck to nuts with nerds and none of them have tried to get you read The Watchmen then your nerds suck and are probably not nerds. For years I have had this book forced upon me by all types of nerds. I refuse every time because I can not even begin to care about graphic novels.

Get new nerds.

I’ll be watching the Watchmen. I think I first read it in the early 90s. I’m not a nerd by any means, and don’t read comics with any kind of regularity, but this is one of those with a really good story to go along with the artwork. I’m interested in how well they capture it in the movie, although I suspect there will be lots of stuff they just couldn’t pack in.

For instance, no Squid, and also I think I saw that they aren’t doing the whole Pirate comic side story in the film, but have shot it to add to the DVD.

I have a set of the original comics purchased in 1987. How cool am I?

Get new nerds.
