Who pays what?

Two athletes do a race in a distant state. The wife of one decides to accompany them as a spectator. When they arrive they rent a car, all told there’s a couple of hundred miles of driving.

Question: Assuming all 3 are employed, should the car rental be split 2 ways, just between the athletes, or between all 3 ?

Two ways. Unless the rental car company is charging for that third seat.

Wife and Hubby are legally bound. I say two ways between the athletes. Now if the athletes are real men, only the loser of the race between the two has to pay. If one is much faster than other, then the guy who can consume the fewer post race beers has to pay.

Definitely two ways for the rental car.

Now if you are all sharing a hotel room, that might inconvenience you a little more. I’m not sure how to handle that one…

Just between the athletes. The spectator didn’t create the need for the car rental and doesn’t particularly benefit. However, she should support not just her husband, but the other athlete as well, if she can. And she shouldn’t necessarily take the front seat if her husband is driving, because the other athlete needs the room for his legs - unless he wants the backseat.

Now, if all three share a hotel room, I think that should be divided three ways. It’s an inconvenience to the solo athlete to have to share and the couple is still saving money by sharing the room.

i think i may be the loner thinking 3 ways.

athlete 1, althlete 2, wife (of athlete 1).

athlete 1 and wife pay 2/3 because why should she get a free ride? it’s more thinking on the behalf of althete 2. more people spit up the costs. if it’s split 2 ways, athlete 2 is paying 1/2 of the wife’s 1/3, so in essence, athlete 2 is paying the wife to come along.

If the third person is doing most if not all of the driving as well as pick-up and shuttle duty, I would have no problems splitting 2 way.

Just make sure that person is on the paperwork in case of an accident.

if the seat would be empty if she wasn’t going, 2 ways.

If you have to repack your gear and bungy the bikes to the roof, 3 ways.

Let’s say, for the sake of arguement, that the 3rd person does none of the driving and there is no shuttle duty or pick up necessary.

It doesn’t matter … I think we’re talking about a difference of less than $25 bucks including gas. Both athletes should be quick to offer the sharing arrangement that benefits the other athlete. Athlete 2 should then graciously accept and reciprocate at the next opportunity with drinks, snacks, lunch, tip or something of a modest expense.

Assuming she’s not doing a bunch of “extracurricular” driving, then 2 ways.

Okay, I’m bored so I’ll give an opinion. The answer is . . . it depends. If the two athletes decided to go together to “share costs” and the wife LATER decided to tag along I’d say she rides for “free.” In other words, split two ways. However, if the husband and wife had planned to go together all along with the other athlete then I’d say they should offer to pay 2/3 of the tab. Personally, I always err on the side of paying “too much.” I hate to feel indebted to anyone.

There always the old caveat:

Grass, cash, or ass… nobody rides for free

The wife pays for the rental car since she has the privilege of not only spectating but most likely doing all the cooking and cleaning up.

“Question: Assuming all 3 are employed, should the car rental be split 2 ways, just between the athletes, or between all 3 ?”

You can’t split “between” all three, only divide among them.

A lot depends on what the wife looks like, so unless you have a picture it is hard to give you an accurate answer.

As a general guideline though, unless she is really annoying it would only be 50/50 split. If your buddy is cool at all, his wife brings her hot single friend.

I agree. She pays 1/3rd of the cost.

I pay everything…every time…then fume and get bitter about it…

I like the way you think.

The wife should meet some girl friends at the race and hook up the triathlete that is not her hubby. It’s teh least she could do.

Athlete 1 (with the wife) offers to pay extra.
Athlete 2 replies “don’t be stupid”
Wife offers to drive/support/help out wherever possible
Wife gets hottie friend for Athlete 2

Everyone wins.
