the one NICE Timex hat that was given at the finish line at IMLP and IMoo I think IS considered “Finishers” gear. I met one person who was wearing one who said that she worked at the finish line a year ago - thought it was a neat hat and “borrowed one”. M-Dot on the back in its full glory…Maybe I am nuts…

When I finished the Cal 1/2 IM in 2002 they handed me a finishers t-shirt and one of the Timex mesh hats with the M-Dot logo on the back. I checked and double-checked the hat and nowhere on it does is say “1/2 M-Dot” or “0.5 M-Dot” nor does it have a disclaimer on it that says “This person did not really finish a full IM race.” I figure if Ironman NA Inc. saw fit to give out M-Dot hats at a 1/2 IM then there’s nothing wrong with wearing it. If this bothers anyone, then oh well…

Those nice Timex hats are thrown out to the crowd all night in Kona, so I wouldn’t say they are exclusive to finishers.
The Timex hats that were thrown out in IMF this year did not have the m-dot logo on them (I know because I got one). I think the finishers may receive a hat with an m-dot but the ones thrown to the general public do not?
I do have a friend that received a hat at the finish line that did have an m-dot logo on the back of his. Otherwise, our hats are identical.
In years past there was a Timex hat that was given out pre-race at the Timex booth in the village. Then, one year (2002 I think) there was no pre-race Timex hat…but at the line you got a VERY nice hat made by Headsweats that has the M-Dot on the back…the other non M-Dot hats were cheaper hats that anyone could get. The ones withe the M-Dot you could only get if you were a finisher.
If you volunteered for an ironman or if you work for the company the clothing would be fine…
otherwise if you are going to wear it keep it subtle.
