Who belongs in the RR Hall of Fame?

Article on snubs here:

And the contestants are:
Kiss
Def Leppard
Pat Benatar
Genesis
Chicago
Boston
The Doobie Brothers
Rush
The Moody Blues
Cheap Trick

The Moody Blues and Doobie Brothers immediately jumped out to me as rock bands that belong. Chicago too. Their early work as CTA was great. I liked a lot of what Genesis use to do. I could make a case for Pat Benetar too. How many woman singers were there fronting a band during the early 80’s that really rocked?

The fact that Rush is not in the RR HOF makes the entire institution a complete joke. It’s not that they are even one of my favorite bands of all-time. They’re not even close to that. But how does a band who’ve been together for well over 30 years, have sold that many records, who still tour and fill large venues almost annually, and who can kick the ass, musically speaking, of just about every band in the RR HOF not get in? The simple answer - because they’ve never been critical darlings and were never considered “cool” or “relevant” by the elite snobs from mags like Rolling Stone et al. I’m mean look at most of their fans…techno-geek losers who play D&D and never get laid. But Run-DMC and Patti Smith? Oh sure, they are shoe-ins! What a crock. Look at a lot of today’s bands - especially some of the more legit metal and emo acts and tell me they weren’t influenced by Alex Lifeson’s guitar riffs. And what rock drummer doesn’t worship Neil Peart? And as bass-player myself, I can’t deny that Geddy Lee cannot be matched in the annals of rock…regardless of whether I’m crazy about his style.

Sorry for the rant.

Let me be the first to give you an AMEN BROTHER. You forgot to mention intelligent lyrics too

It’s hard to believe KISS isn’t in there, just for the sheer bombast and nature of their image since the early 70s. In fact, I find it interesting that none of those bands iare in. The only one I can think of that might not be first-ballot (do they do balloting?) are the Doobs, but even those guys deserve a spot. Instead, we get stoopid “artsy” crap on occasion. Rock and Roll, bay-bee, is down and dirty. It’s also technologically and musically sophisticated, as in the case of Rush or Boston. I mean, c’mon…Tom Scholz and that band were damn pioneers of “arena rock” and musical layering and sound sophistication. Isn’t that worth a bone or two?

Cleveland can kiss my narrow ass (my wife is from south of that town, so don’t tell her I said that ;-). Sounds to me like the RRHOF is just a “secret handshake” society that doesn’t give everybody an equal shot at entering its so-called ‘hallowed halls.’ “What a crock,” indeed.

I would say all those bands should be in there. Cheap Trick is probably the weakest of that group, followed by Pat Benatar and Def Leppard. All were ground breaking type acts and commercial successes. If they don’t belong int he hall, then the hall is seriously flawed.

Benatar had a lot of rock “spank bankability” back in the late 70s and early 80s (hahahahaha!). That’s qualification enough. But she could also belt out a note better than any other woman singing rock back then, too, so that’s even more of a reason to put her in.

I lost all respect for the RR of fame when I found out RUSH wasnt in there, now KISS on the other hand should probly be in there but I saw them on the final tour (I think that tour lasted ten years) and it was like watching the musical Cats, kinda sad.

No, I agree with you on Benatar. As a child of teh 70’s, she was a rock diva. But ranking her in that group she is probably in my lower 3 but definitely worthy of a HOF seat.

Guys nearing 60 prancing around on stage in makeup isn’t rock anymore; it’s more like being overly self-indulgent. I saw their act on several occasions, starting back in 1975, at Cobo Arena in Detroit. They used to put on a helluva show. I even took leave in '96 to fly back to Detroit and catch their stadium show. A very good experience, I have to say. But like I said…60 years old and in makeup? That just reminds me of an old queen who refuses to give up the limelight.

I will also join you on their snub on Rush.

Weak! Holy god I hope you guys never get to choose the inductees in the Hall. What a bunch of Top 40 suburban high school Rolling Stone Educated little people y’all are.

Kiss? The worst band of the 70’s. Not understanding why RUN DMC and Patti Smith are in? Learn about rock beyond your older brother record collection and get back to me.

You remember Patti? I use to run into her and her husband all the time in A2. They were definitely ahead of the curve. So was Iggy for that matter, remember him?

I have never gotten to see Iggy live. I must. I will. He is going to live to be 300 anyway so I have time.

Actually, I’ll get back to you right now…your belittlement and labelling of the rest of us as “little people” made my day. First of all, I didn’t have any older brothers…I had 2 older sisters and their taste in music was spot-on. And Rolling Stone didn’t educate me in music, which I thought you would’ve realized considering I mocked it in my first post. I’ll stand by my 3000+ record collection as compared to anyone, including you. In fact, you sound like exactly the type of “music snob” I so love to hate and who apparently run the mockery known as the RR HOF.

Perhaps Patti Smith and Run-DMC weren’t the best names to mention, as I don’t really object to their place in the RR HOF (so please, spare me any lectures on “understanding” why they made it). I just picked them as perfect examples of performers who fit the Hall’s agenda, so to say. Rush does not fit it and so they don’t make the cut year after year. This despite the fact that any idiot can see why they should’ve been in on the first ballot. This pisses me off and makes the whole process illegitimate in my eyes. If Patti Smith and Run-DMC can get in, there is no possible justification for not including Rush. More records sold/fans? Rush. More influential to future ROCK artists? Rush. Better musicians? Rush. And let’s not forget the fact that they are STILL MAKING MUSIC.

So if I ran the RR HOF, Rush would be in…but, oh let’s see, The Sex Pistols wouldn’t. Would that really be so bad? Now go jerk off to one of your lame Velvet Underground records or whatever you consider Hall-worthy music. I’ve rediscovered my X and Jesus Lizard collection lately and I can’t wait to crank them on the way home. Maybe I’ll even throw in some “Moving Pictures” just to mock you.
