Who are the 26+ guys on the poll?

there’s me, and monty, and skid, and frank day, and last tri in 83. who else?

I’m actually just enterning the 30+ arena this year…First race was sometime in 1979…Started training in 1978 sometime…

First tri in 1981
.

Wow I’m completely envious…probably because my 24th birthday is Saturday…you guys have been around this sport longer than I’ve been alive.

I did my first tri in 1984, this is 2009… I only rate 25 years.

My first triathlon was the Seattle Seafair Triathlon in 1983. I have been competing in at least 3 a year since then.

Tom,

What’s a year between friends. We’ll include you in the 26+ crowd!

my first swim/bike/run was “the human race” in 1980. you were 3rd, i was 4th (you nipped me at the line, f**ker). my first tri was in 77 or 78, but it was XC ski, run, bike. does that count? i did that two years in a row. last week i just saw one of the trophies for that in my tack room – i hadn’t seen it in probably two decades.

First Tri was Santa Barbara October 1980, and have raced every season since.

Where do I look for this poll?

“Where do I look for this poll?”

should we give chuck the location and the secret password necessary for the viewing of this poll?

Dan,

What’s really telling about the pool with nearly 200 respondents is the growth in the last 5 or so years. It’s been extraordinary. Backs up some numbers that I have seen regarding USAT memberships in the same time period.

Bottom line there is still a heck of a lot of new people in this sport. Let’s hope that this continues.

Ensendada tri 1985 for me, so I have another year to go to hit 25. However, in that race, I was the only one I saw wearing a wetsuit as the water temp was pretty cold (it was October and Ensendada is notorious for upwelling cold water temps. It was an O’Neill 3/2 wetsuit that rashed the hell out of me, but I wasn’t blue like most of the guys around me…

First Multi Sport race - The Gill Harder Biathlon, Abilene Texas; 50 mile bike and a marathon with NO aide stations. Spring of 1984. Oops… just 25 years.

I think I won that race…didn’t we buy cases of Pacifico after the race and use them as stools the rest of the afternoon? It was a debaucherous weekend.

I did my first in August of 1983 and then in September and October of the same year. These were the first tris in the deep South put on by Charlie Hoolihan, the original Crawfishman series. I am still participating in Crawfishman only now, put on by Steve Sperier and Mark Salvetti, who started racing in 1986 and 1985, respectively.
I was there when the first aerobars were used by Andrew McNaughton to hand Mike Pigg one of his few defeats.

Bob Sigerson

My first tri was in 1983, but not sure how to count it since I wasn’t active in triathlon from ~ 1987 to 2000ish, and then another hiatus from ~2000 to last year.

John

my first tri was in 77 or 78, but it was XC ski, run, bike. does that count?\\

Only if my lifeguard Ironman competitions count, swimming, paddling, and rowing, with some sprint running inbetween…Then my first one in 1974, so I still got you outkicked, just like Newport 29 years ago…(-;

And before you tell me you did a swim, paddle, and run as a Huntington JG when you were 10 years old, when I was 8 or 9, I used to surf, ride my skateboard to little league pratice, and pitch 9 innings, for my early 3 event combos…

My first race was Aug 1985…Kingston Triathlon 2K swim 55K bike, 15K run. That was the first time I swam 2K in my life without stopping. Can’t remember if Fleck was there, but it was won by Pierre Harvey a summer and winter Olympian…he raced in the 100K TTT at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and raced winter games in Sarajevo and Calgary and was the only male Canadian to ever win a world cup in XC ski. Pierre exited the water in 100+ position motored up to 5th place or so off the bike and then put down a 48 min 15K which I believe to date is still the run course record (on a legit 15K)…most of you guys never heard of him cause he just did tris as training during the summer for the XC ski season.

Anyway, I raced every season since and this will be my 25th year of racing. Tom, I think this year works out to your 26th season of racing if you include 1984…still need to wait a year to get into the “over quarter century club”.
