Looking for a place to live near White Plains, NY. Basically looking for info on areas to avoid. I’m not prejudice, but I want to avoid URBAN, MULTI ETHNIC, or whatever the PC term is for bad neighborhood/ghetto. Safe enough to leave your Yakima bike rack on your car, run without being mugged, no drug deals going on, no hip hop videos being shot, etc.
I’m serious about it though. Looking for a safe area, and I know there must be many, but for a So California resident starting from scratch, a little help would be appreciated.
I lived in an apt building there for two months last year when I was between apartments. Sublet from a corporate relocation firm for a ridiculous sum of $4800/mo for an apt which was like $2500.
But more to your point, White Plains is up and coming. If you can afford it, you probably want to live near downtown, like in the Trump developments or others nearby. I lived just across Broadway on Canfield, which was nice because it was close to the highway, the supermarkets and the Westchester Mall. Also walking distance from the Trump complex which also has a gym there, so it was fairly convenient. Underground parking as well - key. Not a lot of food around however, but that’s coming from a Manhattanite.
As for fishy areas, there’s a housing project just south of downtown and some others just southeast - it should be real easy to spot on Google Earth. The hilly area just north of the train station was a little fishy as well when I drove through there one night - it abuts the tracks. Otherwise, its a fairly decent small city and extremely central to all the major freeways. It’s one of those places that was bound to turn around just because the rest of the county is some of the most expensive real estate on the planet.
If you’re just trying to live near White Plains, well, I don’t think bad neighborhoods will likely be your primary consideration. Affordability will likely be a bigger problem than crime, per se.
I heard a stat recently where something like 75% of the people in White Plains commute there and don’t live there. If you’re looking for something safe and residential, try nearby Rye NY or Greenwich CT. They are both only a 15 minute drive to White Plains and both towns have nice beaches. There are even triathlons hosted; The Greenwich Point triathlon and the Westchester Triathlon.
Personally, I wouldn’t like living IN White Plains; very urban.
Hope this helps!
My wife is relocating I hope temporarily out there. She’ll actually work in Purchase, so we’re looking for something around that area. I did check out, on the web, Greenwich, and does look good. I’m glad you mention the Triathlon being held there. Once we get a place to rent, we’ll start looking for places to train (or perhaps we should look for rentals with the training part in mind).
Purchase, Rye, Greenwich, Harrison, all great areas. Do you have kids? Very good public schools in these towns. I’ve lived in Greenwich my whole life and we’ve got great training in the area…please PM me if you have ANY questions. Funny- most of my family moved from here to Cali!
