So, dude scales the fence, runs across the lawn and actually enters the White House. I would have assumed anyone doing that would be shot dead before making it half way there.
Is this good restraint by the Secret Service or poor security?

People jump the fence all the time, they just get tackled. Good restraint. I would be nice to see police get that type of training.
I would invite anyone who thinks the security is lacking to go ahead and jump the fence to prove it.

I realize that it happens. Just happened last week. But, no one has ever made it to the White House. This guy actually made it inside the building.
I ask the question b/c, again, I would assume a person sprinting towards the WH would be shot before making it to the steps. Also, the Service is being questioned.
Of course, this is damned if you do, damned if you don’t. If they would have shot the dude, who was unarmed, they would be grilled as well.
Its scary to think that if 10 or more people tried it at the same time, fully vested, lightly armed (because they would be noticed at the gates if they had huge rifles), they could do some damage. One guy made it in. Was it a trial run for something bigger? I’d say they need to hire heavier security and perhaps do some drills involving multiple attacks. The problem is that they are not thinking of this scenario or at least taking it seriously.

One thing to note is that that stated he had no visible weapon or bag (bomb) and if you think the Secret Service doesn’t train for bigger assaults and have some heavier weapons available I suggest you give it a try. They go to great lengths to maintain a “low profile”.

He easily could have been a suicide bomber with no visible weapon or bag.
There have been several incidents with people jumping the fence. Prior to this, in every single case, the person was tackled or surrounded almost immediately after hitting the lawn. This guy not only made it to the door, but, made it inside the WH. He easily could have had a bomb (conventional/bio/dirty).
We have no way of knowing. They might have been exercising good restraint, or maybe they were just caught flat-footed.
If you’re asking whether they should treat every fence jumper as if he’s carrying a dirty bomb, then no, they should not. This whole mentality where every incident has to be dealt with as if it’s the worst-case-imaginable scenario, no matter what the actual specifics involved, is corrosive to the American ethos.

Yup. The guy was caught and no harm done. obama wasnt even there. Guess what people, its actually not all that difficult to kill or harm a president. Any halfway smart person acting alone can do it. Its obviously been done before. Luckily there are well trained people to try and prevent that. Theres also probably a lot more going on with security at the white house than we know about. I wouldnt be so quick to discount it.
I’m thinking that security protocols might be more rigid when the first family is in residence. When they leave town, they take a bunch of guys with them and the protocol might change.

Pres O and his daughters had just stepped out the back door. Michelle was out of town.

President Barack Obama and his daughters had just left the White House on Friday evening for Camp David when a man, identified by the Secret Service as Omar J. Gonzalez, 42, of Copperas Cove, Texas, climbed the north fence, darted across the lawn and into the residence.

Given the state of the press these days, the words ‘just left for Camp David’ could mean anything from 5 minutes to 5 hours. There’s no sense of time scale in that article. Anyway, even if the Big O was ‘just’ hopping onto the choppa or into the Suburban, that doesn’t change my thought process, I.E. A majority of the A-squad were with him and security protocols change.

This:
*Gonzales made it over the fence line just minutes after President Obama and the first family took off from the South Lawn on a Marine One helicopter bound for Camp David. *
and this:
The White House grounds were ordered evacuated briefly after Gonzales was able to get inside the unlocked portico doors. They are unlocked because people frequently go in and out of those doors, and it has been considered impossible up until now that an unauthorized person would be able to reach them.
That is concerning.
Don’t be surprised if you get a visit from the SS real soon.

So what?
That is concerning.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
Not shooting the guy on sight is restraint. Allowing him to get into the residence is a failure. It may very well be that the SS detail’s focus was on the area from where the President just departed, but that indicates some significant holes in their security posture, at least for that day. May just be a dropped assignment or a guard not paying attention, but it’s not a good thing.

I’m sure if the President was in the building he would have been shot or immobilized in some other fashion. As it is he’s just a trespasser on Federal property.

Problem solved. When you leave home lock the doors.
That should not be in pink. A lot of security people are asking why the fuck the door wasn’t locked.
It has nothing to do with being afraid. It is a ridiculous, embarrassing, and inexcusable security failure that he got through the front door.
