Which powermeter? or do I need more then one

I’ve got a road bike and tri bike and use both, the tri bike more during tri season though. I actually train with my race rims as well on the tri bike. I’ve been contemplating a powermeter but not sure which one would be best suited for my scenario since I’d want to use them on both bikes. I’m leaning towards a Quarq for cost and simplicity, ie. I’m thinking I can switch the crank between bikes when needed. Any thoughts or suggestions? Both bikes are Shimano.

My thought would be something that is a little easier to change like pedals

are you saying you have one good wheelset (your “race rims”) that you use all the time on both bikes? if yes, i’d say just replace that rear wheel with a powertap and you’re good to go. easiest solution if you’re using it all the time. you could switch the quarq, but switching wheels is easier, especially if you’re doing it anyway.

if you don’t want to use the race wheels on the road bike, then quarq probably isn’t a bad solution if you just want one power meter. but you could probably get two powertaps - one race wheel and one training wheel - for the cost of one quarq, so that’s worth considering as well.

wait for the pedals
.

I was thinking about two powertaps as well since that might come out cheaper overall, and yes I have two different wheel sets. The way I procrastinate I might just wait around for the pedals. Good thoughts, thanks

Unless you have 2 of the $660 powertaps as sold by competitive cyclist, it won’t be cheaper than quarq. I just got a quarq with new bb for $1550. Swapping it from bike to bike is easy. It’s one bolt. I wouldn’t want to do it every day… but if it’s for a few stretches at a time, no big deal (i ride my road bike in the off season, TT bike during race season). If i ride my road bike during the race season, power is probably not necessary (recovery or group rides…)

waiting for a power meter is probably the worst advice. there are 2 very accurate power meters out on the market: powertap and quarq.

id honestly go for the powertap deal competitive cylist has going on

Yes, but… The pedals will come out in the next few weeks, and will probably have 20 problems or issues that cyclists don’t like. So, you will want to wait for Iteration 2.0 or later to buy, unless you like wasting money.

I suggest an indoor power meter based trainer, like computrainer or cycleops. I hate riding indoors, but it’s the safest ride possible.

It’s interesting that you say that. I forget exactly which magazine I read it in (one of the tri mags or Outdoors, most likely) and I’m too lazy to look for it, but… They had a quick review of two of the new pedal PMs (Garmin & Polar from memory) and said that it wasn’t as easy as just “swapping pedals”. They actually said it was about as difficult as swapping a crankset.

I have two powertaps - one in a Hed Jet 9 and one in a DT training rim. My setup works for me because my road bike has a BB30 and my tri bike is GXP. Quarq couldn’t swap. You could also just get a training wheel and throw on a cover for racing.

Just curious what problems you think there will be. I know everyone assumes there will be bugs in v 1.0 but are there any specific’s or just the usual …I bet there will be bugs.

Ummm…not true. You just need to get the right “reducers” and spacers. For example, the pic below shows a SRAM GXP Quarq mounted in a BBright bottom bracket (PressFit30 bearings, same as BB30, with the NDS bearing actually “pushed out” as compared to BB30). All it took was a spacer kit from Enduro bearings.

What BBs do you have on both bikes?

Can you do it in less than a minute?

Seriously…and I’ve said this before, but if I ever had a pedal-based PM, I’d probably STILL prefer to swap the crank if I needed to since it can be an easier/quicker operation…

That’s a good question. I don’t know. I asked the same question on ST on how you figure out what you have. I’ve got a BMC SLX01 and a TT03.

I did the Quarq swap between road and TT bike this last year. Very simple and takes 1-2 minutes max. I’d prefer that setup to having 2 power tap wheels. Then you can use whatever wheels you want. The total cost is similar.

The best I can tell, those both have threaded BB cups, right? If that’s the case, I’d get a pair of SRAM GXP BBs and a Quarq SRAM S975 GXP for the pair.

Yes they’re both threaded. I’ll look into that. Thanks

I swap my Quarq between 3 bikes. It’s actually easier and quicker than swapping pedals.

I bought a cheap powertap, then regretted it. (The first one had to be sent back to be fixed within the first year as it started giving wildy inaccurate results).
Its been fine since them, but this is not the reason I regretted it → I cant use it wth my race wheels.

So I bought a quarq. I still use the powertap on my training road bike cause the sale price was so good but if I could have it over Id just by the quarq.
