Which pedals / shoes

So, my new Lemond Sarthe is making its way from the factory to me. To go with it, I need new pedals. Well, OK, not need, want. I have SPD style now, and am OK with them, but would prefer something with a bigger clear / more contact area. Also, the bike is equiped with a Campy parts mix, so I really don’t want to have Shimano pedals on a Campy bike–just wouldn’t sit right with me–bad aesthetics. I was considering the new Time, but don’t know after Record10’s reviews, and was even thinking about Keywins, but, nylon/plastic body? At any rate, I don’t want to spend serious coin, but I’d go up around $150.

This raises an interesting question though–if I were willing to spend, say $300, on pedals and shoes, should I

a) try to spend equally between the two

b) spend more on pedals than shoes

c) spend more on shoes than pedals

I have allways been a fan of Look pedals. The pp206 is about $70 anywhere and a pair of Sidi T-1’s are about $150, you can find them for less if you look for sales and closeouts.

I personally ride on the 397’s.

I am very happy with the new Look carbon fiber pedals.

Spend as much money as you need to on the shoes for a perfect fit. Carnacs are pretty sweet, and I’ve heard great things about the new carbon-soled Sidi T1’s.

I’m a HUGE Keywin fan, and love the massive platform and rock-solid interface. Speedplay users will go on and on about how it’s the entire cleat surface and not just the pedal surface that’s important, but if you snap a Speedplay equipped shoe onto a pedal and rock it from side to side, you’ll get more motion that you will with a wider platform. The plastic cleat hasn’t proven to be an issue for me, and walking on it doesn’t really affect the “hold” because the part you walk on isn’t the part that holds it in. No springs make it damn near impossible to accidentally pull out, either.

Big Twin (http://www.bigtwincycling.com/keywin.html) is currently having a huge sale on Keywins.
