Which frameset would you get: Cervelo P3 ( 2008 ) $1500 or a P2 ( 2008 ) $800 ? Both seem a bit pricey to me for a 7 yr old frameset but market prices are what they are.
I’ll build either one up with the same parts so other than frameset they would end up being the same.
Based on what I can dig up the geometry seems the same for a 54cm. ( 2008 ) Correct me if I’m wrong.
Oh yeah, they are different color schemes. As Jack says, always a factor not to be taken lightly. The P3 looks better to me.
In absolute terms which is “better” from a performance perspective - yes there are some wind-tunnel watts-numbers some where, telling us the P3 is better, but most likely we are splitting hairs.
There is a whole list of things that have a much bigger and more dramatic impact on those numbers.
If you want to save a few dollars - go with the P2
If you want the bike that looks better to you( not something to be discounted) - go with the P3
.
I would go with the P2. According to Cervelo, the P3 only has ~30 g drag advantage over the P2, <20 s over 40 km. You could take the $700 you’ll save and spend it on any number of equipment upgrades that more than make up that difference. Also, $1500 is a bit steep for a 2008 P3. $800 for the P2 is a deal.
The geometry of the classic P2 and P3 is NOT the same. The new models share the same geometry. Reach is effectively the same, but the P3 has ~1.5 cm lower stack. If you fit on one, you’ll fit on the other. However, if you aren’t a good candidate for long and low geometry in the first place, then the P3 would be even less ideal.
Classic P2 54 cm: S = 512 mm , R = 418 mm
Classic P3 54 cm: S = 498 mm , R = 419 mm
I just raced my first pro season on a classic P2. It’s a great bike. Enjoy!
