Which came first, the fitting or the bike?

So I am now in a position to buy a new bike. Do I hoof it from Vegas down to Encinitas to Nytro and get fitted and have them recommend to me the best ideas for bikes based on the fitting?

Or, do I buy a bike in Vegas and hoof it down to Encinitas and than have the bike adjusted to my fit after the fact?

Or… If anyone can really recommend a good fitter in Vegas???

i’m new. but i think the folks around here would recommend fit… and then a frame and set up to accomplish the ideal fit.

Fit first. It’s much easier to select the correct bike based on your fit parameters than it is to “make the bike fit”.

Appreciate the info. Between this and the wheel size thread from yesterday, I am learning a lot more about bikes. I had bought my last two bikes based mostly on whether or not I would be able to find it in the transition area at Wildflower (I.E. bright orange Trek 100, then bright powder-coated sky blue Monument Cycle). :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Edit: I can’t spell “wheel” apparently.

Fit first, definitely. Then find the bike that fits the fit. But you knew that.

Fitters in Vegas. No one comes to mind. The guy at ProCyclery is kind of a know it all, and he pushes slack frames, even though he sells Cervelo (or used to).

Bike Shop (in Henderson) … no. Maybe if you were looking for a downhill mtn bike, dude.

Bicycle Co. (also in Henderson) … I like these guys. But they don’t really seem to sell many bikes … unless they’ve changed. Nice guys though.

Nuvision … in Summerlin … nuff said. I made the long drive over there a few times. They were rude. I don;t drive a Range Rover. Nice stuff though. Especially if you like Euro stuff. And they sell Kuota.

Am I forgetting anyone? Oh yeah, McGees. Nice stuff (and expensive), but they never impressed me with their knowledge. It always seemed as if I knew more than they did. Which is scary. i don’t know much.

I’d make a weekend of it and go to SoCal. Any excuse to get out of Vegas is a good excuse. At least it was for me.

Not to condescend too much … but the riding out here, and the running, and the tri scene in general, is really embarrassingly good.

The season’s almost over. How about sneaking into Interbike and then buying something this winter. I bet your Gaming Board creds would get you in no problem.

JEALOUS!!! That’s what I am of you. You SHOULD be embarassed about the tri scene out there. Crikey, there’s a race - a GOOD one every frickin’ weekend out there. I think you’re right about the bike scene out here.

I’m not going to run down any oof the LBS’s out there. I need them too much. besides, Props to Terry and the guys at THE BIKE SHOP. This store has helped me immensely. Through both of my bikes, both accidents - These guys have always come through for me. Lord only knows how many damn gels and nutrition products I have bought from them.

I think a trip to San Diego might be in order. I’ll try to time it with a cool concert at the Belly-Up. Maybe I’ll catch and OMBAC preseason rugby match. Sounds like a pretty good weekend to me.

i don’t mean to insult any of the vegas shops. i think they do a pretty good job of serving the city’s needs. but when it comes to tri, it seems like more of an after thought. i bought a bunch of stuff from bike shop, also. mostly tubes, tires and whatnot. the stores so small, and everyone seems pretty focused on mtn biking. at least in my experience.

my wife – god bless her – signed me up for IM CDA next june. so i actually have to start training and get my arse in shape. got me a swim coach, even. we start on thursday. i dont think she beleived me what i told her how poor of a swimmer i actually am.

mohole15,

I’ll second Khai’s suggestion and add that this route is much less expensive as well.

In the worst possible scenario, you could purchase a bike/frame that doesn’t fit you and cannot really be made to work very well. In this instance, you end up with a bike that doesn’t ride or handle the way it should and you never get to experience the way its supposed to be with a bike that fits! You miss the joy of wanting to go riding because the bike just “disappears” underneath you and becomes just an extension of your body.

Thanks Ben. Appreciate the info. Looks like I know what my next step is going to be. Now all I have to do is wait until I can get down to SoCal again. This will be like the fourth time I’ve gone down there in the last eight months. I love San Diego, but man do I hate the drive from/back to Vegas. It’s a boring drive and really dangerous.
