Which aero lid - Advantage 2 or Meteor?

I’m replacing my Rudy Project aero helmet for this season. I can’t decide which one to buy, the Giro Advantage 2 or the Bell Meteor.

I don’t care about the USAT rules and such so leave those out. I’ll always have 2 helmets (I have a backup Rudy Project Syton) with me in case they DQ the Meteor after an inspection. However, I’ve never seen a helmet inspected as I entered any races I do. In fact, mine are in a case in my bag as I go into transition.

So…which one and what are your reasons?? I’m leaning toward the Bell Meteor, although its about $60 more. Prices are about $120 compared to about $180.

What size is your head? Bell comes only in Small and Medium. I’d have gone with meteor if my giant head fitted into it.

having worn both before in size M, i found that the tail of the Giro was slightly lower than the Bell. It might be best for you to try out both to see which one suits your position better. sizing wise they are about the same, although the Giro may be marginally tighter in size M than a Bell. The Bell has more vents, which may be a good thing but who knows.

I started with the Syton too and went with the Meteor last year for TTs when USA Cycling took CEN certification. I love the Meteor, but have kept my Syton for USAT events too. I can’t comment on the Advantage, but I went with the Meteor largely because it was Bell, CSC used it, the Giro had delayed the Advantage. It fits me perfectly, so I’m not running out to buy the Advantage. If you could try both on, that would be ideal. I know a couple of guys that ordered them from Europe last year and found out it didn’t fit their lids. Good luck!

I wear medium helmets. I figured the Bell was lower, so thanks for the input. I live in the middle of no-where - Sedona, AZ - and ZERO bike shops within a one way 2 hour drive carry anything that resembles triathlon stuff.

I’ve read that the Bell Meteor is hard to get on in a transition situation? yes…no…?

I’ll be purchasing over the net, and just live with the purchase when I make it.

it’s OK to get on… no more difficult than the Giro i’d say. Don’t expect it to be easy to get on like a Rudy but if you practise enough with it at home i think it would be ok. It’s probably an individual thing but i could not wear sunglasses with either the Giro or the Bell. The earflaps simply pressed the arms of the specs into the sides of my face and it was uncomfortable. So i only used them for TTs. Now i use the LG Rocket for Tris. Heavier but much easier to get on in transition.

how did the lg rocket get left off your list?

I just got a white Advantage2 and love that helmet. Raced it in a very cold training event and can’t wait to really use it this summer.

No idea…haven’t considered that one. Should I?

i just think the Meteor looks the coolest.

Well, it is the best. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t. It’s not much of a decision if you are considering performance.

i would deff consider the rocket as well. is i remember corectly it scored the highest iin every wind tunnel test i have seen, looks good, and is not expensive.

I personally think the Giro Advantage 2 and the Bell Meteor helmets look cooler than the LG Rocket.

Both test pretty much identically in the wind tunnel through different yaw angles (they’re built by the same company…). The LG Rocket is a pretty different helmet… with an open back.

You could probably improve the Giro Advantage or the Bell Meteor by sealing the bottom of it, or fashioning a custom extension (search the forum… someone has done this before), which is something you probably couldn’t do as well for the LG Rocket.

Whatever it is, don’t expect too drastic an improvement. Even the worst aero helmet is 80% as good as the best aero helmet in terms of drag reduction.

Says who?

I concede. (=

Personally, I think the Spiuk Kronos is a great helmet… comfy, tests great in the wind tunnel for most people (the cone-shaped tail is pretty neutral w.r.t. head position). Might be worth considering if your head isn’t too small or too large (since they only have one size).

there are several post in this thread about certain helmets testing better than another.

I haven’t seen ANY data on helmets other than Gary’s post on the rocket vs. giro in his down diver position (one rider, shown in one position, at one yaw).

please, if there is a test, please share it (the fan/balance test doesn’t cut it for me)…

I have a Meteor and the Kronos. I like the Kronos. The Bell it is definitely heavier. My team is using the Advantage this year so I’ll be getting mine soon when the new kits come in and I can comment on this better at that time. The Meteor has similar dimensions to the Kronos and I like the fit better than the Kronos but the Kronos fits better against my back.

You never saw this? I just posted this yesterday in a reply to Mr. Day.

There’s yaws and everything for ya.

Too bad some ya-hoo deleted all of their posts in this thread:

“Fast as fast can be, you can’t catch me!”

yeah, saw that but it is two years old and if memory serves, doesn’t include the giro/bell…
