I am jumping on a plane last minute tomorrow morning for work and will be in Tampa over the weekend? Where can I get in the water in the area? Is there any organized open water swimming groups. I would really like to mix in and get in on the fun. I am a strong swimmer.
There is an organized Saturday morning swim with Matt from Tri 3 Racing at Clearwater Beach. Check out the St. Pete Mad Dogs web site, as they also have a group swim once a week near Clearwater.
If you are a YMCA member, there is a great 50 meter pool in New Tampa, which is north of Tampa just off of I-75.
From your screen name, maybe you’ll be at MacDill AFB? If so, Bobby Hicks pool is off South Dale Mabry and Mango towards the Base. Hours Saturday and Sunday are 10 - 4, I believe. It’s free to the local public, but I don’t think you’ll have trouble getting in.
The mad dogs do their swim by the Don Cesar on wednesdays around 6. I just finished up my open water swim last night and saw around 50 of them walking down the beach as i was leaving the water. Im not sure if they do any other swims though as im not a member
good ole bobby hicks. i swam there in high school. in case you do swim there, ill repeat what i was told my first day there, “if you hear gunshots, dive for the bottom of the pool.”

I just went swimming along the beach when we were staying just a little south of St John’s Pass a few weeks ago. I’m pretty sure that that large fish like creature that swam under me was not a shark.
