Where to swim in NYC

Staying in Manhattan for a few days - 53rd & 3rd at Marriott. Anyone know of nearby lap pools to get some swimming in?

thx much!
Julie

Ha ha ha, good lap pools in New York is an oxymoron. Either Red Tide masters (www.redtide.com) or Chelsea Piers ($$$) or Asphalt Green.

Asphalt Green is on the upper east side (like E. 90th and York). I heard the dip fee is $10. According to their website, they have a tri club and a master’s team ( http://www.asphaltgreen.org/ ).

I’m a member of AG (pool and tri club) and unfortunately the 50m pool which is actually v. good is shut through the summer for renovations. There is an outdoor 25 yard lap pool which is not as bad as it sounds and the schedule for that is on the website - 'fraid I don’t know what the dip fee is.

$25/drop in fee.

$25/drop in fee.
Yikes, somebody is going to lose their Miller High-Life privileges,…but I guess it is New York.

SBR multisports at 58th St and 7th Ave (www.sbrshop.com) has an endless pool. I was there in Feb., they let me swim in it for $25/hour, it was totally awesome. If anyone from SBR is reading, sorry I splashed so much water on your floor.

You could try the reservoir.

Serious or kidding? How about:

  1. Lasker Pool in Central Park. Free, rarely crowded, and >25 yards (~40 yards or so). Downside is that the hours are 11am-3pm and 4pm-7pm. http://www.centralparknyc.org/virtualpark/northend/laskerrink

  2. Riverbank State Park. $2, 50 meter indoor pool with usually 6 lanes open from 6:30am-8am and 6:30pm-8pm (I think), and a 25 meter outdoor pool that I don’t know the hours of. Downsode is that it’s way the F up the 1 train at 137th on the westside. http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/info.asp?parkID=75 or http://www.swimmersguide.com/query/Detail.cfm?PoolID=3603

Your best bet is the 25m indoor pool at the Vanderbilt Y. 47th and 3rd. There used to be masters swimming at night. Call and check.

Serious. I’m lucky, after living there for 10 years they still let me sneak in to Chelsea Piers.
