Where to swim before Oceanside 70.3

Where would you recommend for a spot of open water swimming before Oceanside 70.3? A lake would be ok but a nice ocean swim would be better. No need to go very far, just a wee practice before the race.

If the waves are small, just swim right in front of the expo at the pier. If there is some swell though, there’s not really anywhere that’s “protected” from the surf unless you go down to La Jolla and swim La Jolla Cove.

Last year I was able to hook up with a group of athletes from Xterra Wetsuits on Friday AM. We swam out past the pier and back. I imagine if you ask around you will find a similiar group doing the same thing next year.

Just go in right off the beach past the breakers. It will be cold.

La Jolla Cove, sorry had to do it.

Ha, ha. Bob, that’s a solid day at the Cove, which as we all know, is rare! You’re scaring this poor person! Ha, ha.

Whitey is out there every day, regardless of the swell especially since the silly folks in La Jolla value seals (aka bait) more than children.

It’s one of Emilio’s local surf break.

Nice one
.

Thanks for the suggestions. I thought the pier was off limits until the race but glad to hear perhaps not.

What do you expect the water temperature to be?

Can get down to 57. 61 would be lucky

The pier/beach is open for swimming but the harbor is not. If you don’t know the swim is in the harbor. Most years the water temp is between 57-60 but it can get down to 53. I think in 07 it’s was cold. In Spring the weather is unpredictable morning low 50’s but warms up to the mid/high 60’s. If we get a late season storm it can be wet and cold.

Similar temp to early UK races, then. Not nice, but doable! Thanks for clarifying the swim restrictions!

It’s a fun race I’ve raced it 6X and volunteered before that. This year would of been 7 but I got sick race week. I like the course and in general the weather is good for racing, this year was near perfect. The water is cold but since it’s a harbor swim no waves to deal with. If there’s swell we might pick up some rollers at the harbor entrance. On the bike you need to pace yourself, the first part is rollers and kinda fast. The second part has 3 hills, the first is a solid climb but nothing to tough. Run is “mostly” flat except for a couple of rollers and the area around the pier but NOT a hilly course.

Thanks for that. I’m looking forward to it
