I know I am a bit behind schedule to find somewhere to stay for the birkie next year, but does anyone have any recommendations? Also is anyone willing to let my wife and myself stay with them? We would be fine sleeping on the floor or anywhere to be out of your way.
Wife and I were late on that last year too. Ended up getting a place in Winter, WI about 30miles away. Other than being a little far, it’s pretty nice.
1st rule is to stay near the start in Cable / Telemark - you never know what may hit you the night / morning of race so you want to be reasonably close. We typically stay at the Lakewoods, only about 7 miles away, but they are likely booked. Call the lodging / real estates in the area and ask about private homes being rented. I almost bough a small cottage on Lake Namakegon nearby that was rented every year to Birkie skiers. Other options are out by Moose Lake (I have stayed at Louis Landing), and places like that. Some people rent their townhome out at Telemark as well. The Telemarl Lodge is closed and if open don’t stay - its a dump.
Another option may be a motor home that can be parked at Telemark - I had a friend who only came up to spectate do that last year.
In the past I have stayed overnight at the one local school. Buses pull up to the front door of the school and transport you! Or you can walk to where you parked your car and drive to the large lot on the highway between Hayward and Cable and get on the bus.
