So here I am in Dearborn, MI on business. I search slowtwitch and find all kinds of biking information, but where do I run? I only brought my sneaks. I don’t have my bike. Any suggestions? I’m at Ford and Mercury, but I have a car (a Ford Focus, of course) so I can drive somewhere if necessary…
Don’t know where you’re staying in Deaborn, but Hines Park is a good place to run (and bike). If it isn’t in running distance from your hotel, you can drive there and park at any number of spots along Hines Drive. It’s a long park, stretches from Dearborn to Northville (probably 20+ miles) along the Rouge river. There’s a wide running path along side Hines Drive the whole length of the park. There are restrooms and water fountains scattered throughout the park, and the scenery isn’t too bad. Only catch is that the park is basically the flood plains for the river, so if it rains much it will be closed due to flooding (happens many times a year).
This sucks…my favorite time of the year to run and I’m sick. Hines is great to run on, but lots of rush hour traffic. If you want to drive about 30 min, I’d recommend Willow or Oakwoods Metropark. Willow has a 4.5 mi paved bike loop and there are xc ski trails you can run on too. It’s the site of the Willow Time Trial and Willow Duathlon in the spring in addition to high school XC meets in the fall.

Hines park has a trail that runs next to the road.
If comming from from dearborn, you can get on hines drive from Ford Road just west of the Southfield Freeway. I would recommend that you take that past Outer drive (about 1 mile down) and park just west of Outer drive on the south side.
If you run west you will have 6 to 7 miles of trail that won’t cross any roads so that would be a 12 to 14 mile run. If you want to run further you can follow hines for another 10 miles or so.
Like wdfaRacing said, Willow is great too, I used to live right next to it. It’s a really quiet under-used park. If you park by Washago Pond you have a choice of running the Willow loop or another trail to Lower Huron Metropark. Get a park map cuz they are really nice trails. There is a 3 or 4 dollar entry fee.
If you have the chance, go up the Rochester and run Paint Creek…very, very nice (about a 30 min drive). If you see an older guy (62) running like a bear say hi for me, he’s my dad. I’m sure Tom will chime in with some more suggestions soon.
