What is a good way of positioning the spare tubular for HIM. I have a carbon wing, attachment on the back for CO2 inflator head and CO2, two Gorilla bottle cages. I also have a X-lab bag for a spare. Should I place it inside the wing in between two bottles, behind my tail or put it under the wing, behind the seat post, just leave it hanging there secured with a strap. Or do I bother with this bag at all. I do carry a tire lever and a multi tool in the bag. Any suggestions are great as I am new at this. Thinking about what would be the best solution aero wise. Or is it a factor, I maybe overthinking, have a “mild” OCD.
tape it to the top of your aero helmet.
Thanks. I will do just that.
well, honestly with all that IMHO unnecessary extra gear on your bike and behind your saddle your aero performance will be very compromised anyway. in this case you probably shouldn’t worry about the proper placement in terms of aerodynamics but instead put the tire some place where you can take it out quickly and easily.
FWIW, i only have one bottle cage mounted on the down tube and tape my spare tubular together with the CO2 system right behind the bottle, where the bottle cage on the seat tube would be. it’s very aero because the bottle on the down tube directs the air around the tire, plus it lowers your center of gravity.
Have you considered not carrying a spare tire or tools?
Also, you might want to get rid of the behind the saddle water bottles. Just mount an aero water bottle in between your aero bars.
I’ve never understood the need to carry tools for a 50 mile bike ride. I’ve been cycling for 19 years and never needed a “tool”. I have used 2 tire levers, a spare tube and a CO2. I’ve never used anything more then that. If you perform regular maintenance on your bike, tools in a race are not needed, even at 112 mile IM’s.
One water bottle on the downtube, one behind the seat, if you need it, and the spare tubbie in the other cage behind the seat. No reason to carry more then 2 bottles and that frees up the second bottle cage behind the seat for your spare tubbie, razor blade and CO2 taped together.
Leave the tools at home!
What !
No heavy tool kit on that nice new bike ![]()
Vittoria (i think) makes a product called “pit stop” that seals and inflates a tubular tire so you can fix it right on th ebike and skip the spare tire and the co2.
I Have been running Stans No Tubes sealant in my tires that I ride for training (tubulars) and have seen it fix some large gashes before I even pulled over. With a couple tbsp. of that stuff sloshing around in your tires, you can poke them with an ice pick and they seal in seconds, it’s worth trying for your purposes.
the pit stop sealant only seals small punctures. it’s a 50/50 chance of being able to ride on

I read somewhere that it was higher, like 54%.
it depends on saddle your height and FTP, i was told
.
Tool kit?..I don’t need no stinkin’ tool kit!! : )
+2 On Stan’s Sealant in the tubbies. I have been using this stuff for the past two seasons and have not had a single tubular flat.
Prior to using Stan’s I have had 3 cans of the Vittoria stuff, none worked well and the air leaked out again within minutes.
I have a friend who stashes it inside the seat tube. Claims it only takes a few more seconds to get out if you ever need it and you don’t get more aero than that!
pic or it aint true
a tubualr tire in a seatpost ?

I was riding a pretty worn out tire the other day and sliced it enough that it made a really loud hiss, a significant hold maybe bigger than a bit of spagetti. By the tire I pulled over, it had self sealed. I shrugged and rode off, maybe I lost 5 pounds, I dunno. When I got home I changed the tire but as an experiment blew up the old one and punched holes in it with an awl, they all self sealed in seconds. I’m really impressed with this stuff. I have enough old tubular equipment that I’m going to see if I can ride tubulars for training.
What’s ironic is I’ll be racing on clincers a lot, go figure. Except for cross.
I was thinking about placing it in a rear jersey pocket
.
how about using it as a number belt? ![]()
Ok, got it, great, multi tool is going out. The spare goes behind my ass on the carbon wing and the hell with aero, I will just pedal harder. I appreciate all your suggestions. I kind a new I was overthinking and overdoing it, I will keep it simple. Not sure if I am ready to ride with no spare, Vittoria Pit Stop will go on for the shorter races, unless someone talks me into it before the race in New Orleans. Thanks to you all.
You don’t need anything for shorter races.
