so as a young guy who is new to this stuff but wants to continue indefinitely, where is the sport going? i came from a running background and can see where thats going… more sponsorships, more oppurtunities to work less while training, more teams delivering results(hansons brothers), and also more chances for guys to make money who are in the bottom tier of the elite ranks.
It may be a fool’s game to predict where our sport is headed now.
The most popular interpretation is that the sky’s the limit. The sport is growing and will continue to grow. Some version of that is a supportable scenario, but there are a number of pitfalls faced by triathlon.
The general age disposition of the U.S. population, a potential lack of emphasis on exercise by younger (teen and pre-teen) demographics and looming political and economic issues put constricting pressure on the sport in the broad sense.
On the up side, the emergence of the Ultra Distance as the de-facto banner for the sport, the proliferation of races and the rapid sell-outs of events a year in advance seem to support an argument for robust growth.
Is it sustainable? So many factors influence that it is difficult to say.
