Where do you buy cheap cable kits?

I’ve always bought nicer kits for my bikes, but I’m putting together a cheaper build and can’t seem to find any cheap kits under $35. Anyone have a go-to?

Have you tried Icycleusa.com?

i hadn’t heard of it. but they’re currently closed for moving or something like that.

Sign up for ProBikeKit.com’s enewsletter. Every once in a great while they will have cable sets for ridiculously cheap. I once saw them for $6 for a shift + brake set complete and bought ten of them. Free shipping as well. They work well, but their downside is that the cores want to unwind fairly easily, so you need to cut the extra length off and crimp the cable end on before tightening down on the cable clamp.

My cost to build up a bike is now down to ~ $12 for cables/housing. I buy bulk reels of brake/shift housing and cables. It’s really insanely inexpensive. Just search ebay for housing bulk and the Clarks brand cables sold in singles. It’s not a ‘kit’ per se, but if you plan on building up several bikes a year you can’t beat it.

now we’re talkin.

thanks.

You can find the cheap cable kits but most of the time they come with plastic end caps. After a few months you may find that they will tear and let the housing dig into your shifters or frame.

I’ve been able to find aluminum ones at my LBS for fairly cheap and use them for years.

I buy the cables, and lenghts of housing from your local shop. My shop had some tandem shift cables that were needed for my long cable routing to my back derailleur. The had Simano cables and Jagwire housing i thing, all good, cut to your specs.

I go into my LBS where they have lots of rolls of brake and shifter housings. I pay per foot, but it’s crazy cheap. I buy the actual cables from their bulk box as well. Seems like it’s under $20 for everything.

I would have done that too, but my LBS is not in line with yours on pricing. Brake and shift cables - $5.95 each. Housing $2/foot. It’s hilarious. It’s only slightly less than buying a list price Dura Ace kit.
