Where are all the Google Earth flyovers?

Ok, Google Earth has been out for a couple months now. Why haven’t I seen more buzz about this as a useful tool for mapping & doing flyovers of the IM bike courses? A few weeks ago someone posted a .kmz on TNO which was a 3-D flyover of the IMC bike course (can’t give you the link cause TNO is down right now). But this is really cool and I have it if anyone wants me to e-mail it to them.

So, when will some enterprising young hack with some free time on his hands take it upon himself to create similar flyovers for all the other IM bike courses? Or any other bike course for that matter. We should soon have a repository somewhere of all these 3-D flyovers.

I want to see one for MOO !!!

Me too! And Timberman.

A Slowtwitch user name Bauer did an amazing report for the Lifetime Fitness Tri course on his bauertrinews.com Web site.

you can see it here:

It might be tough since the area is pretty much in low resolution compared to the downtown Madison map.

Just think a fly over of the entire 112 miles. The first 2.4 would be boaring but it would be neat to see the helix and everything from there on.

Can’t help you with the IM courses but I have used Google Earth to check out the routes I’ll be riding during my vaction next week.

This thing is pretty cool but it is truly amazing for those areas covered by the highest defintion shots. I live in one of those areas and the detail is amazing. Our house was mostly shaded by a big tree but I could see my neighbor’s car in their driveway and that there was a soccer game going on at the park down the street. The secret stuff must be unbelievable. I bet the CIA could tell what brand ball the kids were playing with

How do you do a fly over and save it of a course with turns? I paid for the “Plus” and still can not figure it out…hell, I cant figure out how to save a path for that matter. I think we need a Google Earth class.

I have a file of the Moo course that I found on Motionbased. I can email it to you if you are interested, or go to the motionbased trailnetwork, use the quick filters and filter for time: 2004, activity: road cycling, event type: race, location: WI. This leaves about 5 activities and one is the IM bike course.

I dunno but the one I have of IMC does the turns… the whole view just rotates with the turns. I’ll send it to you if you want to try to reverse-engineer it. Just give me an e-mail address.

Has anyone figured out how to measure distances on Google Earth?

I’ve been using it to chart elevation gains and losses over routes I know but can’t figure out how to mark a starting and ending point and figure out distances (if possible). Its an incredible program.

Sure -

Tools - Measure - back tab is called “Path”
.

Any idea how to delete the last leg of a path (in case you made a mistake), without deleting the whole path?

Awesome. My day is shot now, but I’m going to have a very creative run this evening.

Post some gps points for the course and I can create it…

A right click will delete point for point your last points…

Buy the map too - it’s great
