Haven’t been in the water since March 17th… no end in sight here in CO.
Parker Rec is showing that they plan on opening their outdoor pool on 6/15 (tentatively) so they must have some sort of information. The Rec Center is tentatively scheduled to open on 6/1 but they didn’t specify if that included the indoor pool.
In Alberta, it will take few months before gyms / pools reopen. Pretty sure they will wait until the number of new case is somewhere around zero. So physical distancing will no longer be required… TDB
I totally get why they are waiting - but I really, really miss swimming. Kid’s swimming lessons got cancelled a couple days before they were supposed to start. Playing in the bathtub isn’t quite the same…
Just got word from my pool that they are opening tomorrow. Nothing too strict on behavior, but they are taking 15 min break every hour from the outdoor pool to clean, and 10 min every hour in the gym to clean. Shorter hours (10-5), and no guests. Plus concessions will be open, and you can purchase bottled water from there (nothing else though).

Also where is your pool located? So no restriction compared to normal on the number of swimmers?
Our HOA pools where I live in Tampa opened last Friday. These are two separate 25 scy pools about 2 miles apart, each climate controlled for year round use).
Locker rooms open. 25 person per pool limit. Haven’t had to double up in a lane. Haven’t seen more than 10 people at the pool at any one time, maybe 4 actually swimming at most.
No additional cleaning measures but all chairs/chaise lounges have been removed from the pool deck. People may bring their own if they want to lay out.
Local swim team has reopened practice but they are at the other pool and I don’t know what they are doing.
Visits are not time limited.
No kids lessons.
Thankfully, there never were senior’s aqua sessions to begin with at these pools.
No health checks or questionnaires about being symptom free.
No other rules. Hours are somewhat shorter because they are short lifeguards as some of the lifeguard parents would not let them go back to work.

I should have also mentioned in this thread if your pool is indoor or outdoor. This would make a difference in some operations. Lots of Northern US, Canada, Europe, would mainly be indoor pools. Where I live (Ottawa Canada), there is no timeline formally to re open pools and gyms operated by the city. Hopefully pools can open sooner than gyms.
Florida gyms may reopen Monday, 18 May. I’ve already been swimming 5 times since May 5th and I’ll be back in the gym next week too.
Bowser has not made an announcement regarding outdoor pools in the District. The stay-at-home order, barring gatherings of ten or more people, has been extended through June 8.
In Maryland, Montgomery County public pools are planning to open, but that decision will depend on guidance from public health officials. According to a county official, the county is looking into ways to change operations if and when the pools open to ensure everyone’s safety.
Virginia pools are required to close under the state’s order through June 10.
My county hasn’t re-opened yet (even though the entire state of OR counted 9 new cases of covid-19 yesterday), but when it does, the “Phase I” indicates that gyms will be allowed to re-open (with restrictions), but pools are specifically prohibited. What says the slowtwitch wisdom on this? It seems a little backwards to me - opening gyms which must undergo a whole lot of cleaning vs pools which are already filled with disinfectant?
Maybe you can show this thread to your county officials and they can all others in places where pools did open before gyms. As most of this is theoretically done based on probility of community transmission, but often based on other pressures of local health people, combined with economics of operating pools and other facilities, most of the decision making is imperfect, but if those in one region can see what is being done in others they may be able to relax/modify their approach. Realistically no one has the “perfect answer”. All these pool reopening procedures are just experiments with no one knowing what is the best and really most public health officials are not going to be able sample what 20 different locations around the world are doing and superimpose that on their own government/city rules and come up with the best decision. They will just look inward to their own city/county and more than likely make a conservative decision in their own information space.
In regards to city owned aquatic centers, they’re just starting to roll out schedules. Scottsdale is opening everything up, so I suppose I won’t see what the SOPs are until I show up. Mesa is doing Reservation Only Lap Swims during their phase 1 at two aquatic centers (1 JUN), phase 2 opens two more aquatic centers (29 JUN) still on reservation only lap swim and limited capacity swim lessons. For perspective, during most of the year there are two aquatic centers open to the public for lap swimming.
Lap Swimmers really aren’t your problem. You don’t really need to limit capacity beyond one per lane since COVID-19 doesn’t survive in chlorinated pools and outdoor exposure hasn’t really caused infections. Most of the infections were consistent and prolonged exposure indoors. What is the problem though are locker rooms.
Dev,
Thanks for this thread.
I ran a pool last summer (small town pool here outside of boston) I am not running this summer (new twins and all) but they normally would open this weekend and the word on the street is, maybe July 1. But even that is… questionable.
The other pool I/we train at is at the local hs. It is a bubbled pool and so when the top is down its open air. Prob is you need about 45 people side by side to get the bubble down and rolled up. UGH. The pool director is a great guy and I know he is pushing for this to happen. So we can all get some swimming in. I directed him to this forum chat to help him with this.
It behooves me to have it re-open.
But otherwise here, outside of boston, dude, its crickets when it comes to pool openings. I think the mentality out here in this area is one of taking extra precautions and extra time not rushing back. It def is a double edged sword.

It almost seems for indoor pools the best option is show up on deck with your bathing suit already on from home, dive in, finish swimming leave directly and go change in your car or back at home (or wherever). This would work where it is not too cold and can leave the pool area “wet” with your bathing suit on. Should be easy at outdoor pools.
I think this is very much true. However, swim lessons and the general open/family swims with families camped out for the day would be. With the loss of those revenue streams, it could make it difficult economically for some municipalities. In my area, we have two municipal pools, one indoor that’s open year round and 1 outdoor pool that’s only open in the summer. In the case of the outdoor pool, it’s drained in the winter and refilled in the spring. This year, they’ve decided because they concerned to hold swim lessons and have the general public swims, they are not going open due costs of filling, treating and maintaining the pool all summer.
On the otherhand, I just got an email that our indoor pool will be reopening in mid-June. Protocols are still TBD.
I have swam at Wayland several times, great group and Jen is awesome.
I used to swim masters at Wellesley College and now swim at BSI in Wellesley with CRA. I teach at OIin College, so those are just more convenient for my commute from Waltham.
It will be interesting to see if Wayland can open as an outdoor pool before BSI. I might also rejoin the Y in Waltham if their outdoor pool is available.
On the plus sides, beaches are allowed open on the 25th, so anywhere that is currently restricting OWS should be open. I haven’t swam in months, I almost miss it.

And it’s not just the loss of revenue but also that they don’t want to “discriminate against families” by letting fitness swimmers swim but not kids to play, have lessons, etc. This would not be PC.
