When to see a doc for a cold?

I’ve had a reasonably bad cough for 6 weeks now. Sore throat most of that time, but little other symptoms. I had a 101 fever for a day, but it’s been about 97 the remainder. Coughed up a little bit or brown/red twice but think it was just an injury from coughing hard. Very little running nose issues. Today my head starting feeling severely contested - ears have been driving me nuts the past two days.

Doctor visit?
Minute clinic?
Try and tough it out longer?

FYI I have a big presentation in about ten days that I’d like to be on my game for.

That really doesn’t sound like a cold.

Sinus infection? Allergies?

Seen medical folks 3 times in the last 25 years. Broken hip, dog attack, and deep slice in my leg. Cold? Pfft.

Visit doctor, skip the minute clinic. This could be (in my completely non-professional opinion) a bronchial infection. Don’t mess around with that. Of course, if it is viral-based, your doc could just tell you to ride it out. 6 weeks seems a bit long to me for a viral infection, though.

Good luck!

Yeah that warrants a visit to a provider that isn’t a minute clinic. Likely a chest x-ray to rule out pneumonia for a cough lasting that long with fever. We would also have to consider pertussis based on symptoms. Feel better.

Probably need more information (like exactly how much time you spent in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone), but pretty sure you gots the Ebolas. Doesn’t look good for that big presentation.

In all seriousness, six weeks is a pretty long time. There are some things you can tough it out and some things that need antibiotics. Only a doctor can make that call and I would say that six weeks is past the time to see one.

That’s not a cold.

Awesome story for you. My father in law had similar symptoms about a year and a half ago. He told himself that it was allergies. Then it got worse and worse and worse still. He finally ended up in the hospital with some weird infection that they never really figured out. He had fluid in his lungs and at one point his heart stopped beating. He was in ICU for about 6 weeks. He was on a ton of medication and blood thinners because he started getting blood clots from being inactive. He is mostly better now.

Go see your doctor.
