When the elastic bands that were holding your bike shoes in place

fly off onto the course, isn’t that littering?

When you blow your nose isn’t that littering too?

If you use dental floss it just snaps but stays attached to your shoe/bike for the duration of the ride. After you’re done the race, you can remove the remnants and dispose of it appropriately.

I find that they generally stay attached to my shoes, and I notice it weeks later. On some occasions, they’ll stay attached to the deraileur instead. The force of holding themselves there seems to cinch them down a good bit, especially if you make them tight enough to snap without having to grab them.

That’s why I try to arrange mine to shoot off into the spectators.
