When should I cut back on IM(swim) training?

I’ve been swimming with a new group lately, and it’s a Hell of a lot of IM compared to what I previously did (being next to none). In the last month I’ve swum about 50,000 yards, with less than 20,000 of that free, the rest being the other 3.

While I am doing quite well in my swimming I’m just wondering if I should cut back a bit of the IM since I’m not gonna do any IM during a 1500 OW swim. I’m just looking for that limit of how much I can do before I start to slow my potential free progress.

Simple enough.

There are lots of people who will tell you that swimming strokes is important for triathletes. I cannot disagree more.

As a collegiate swimmer who specialized in IM, I do not do single IM sets since I started tri (and I do not miss them). I cannot see a reason to do it. You are pressed for time to get in the disciplines. You are no longer a swimmer, you are a triathlete. You swim freestyle. Do it and get it faster.
