When running on multipurpose trails, which side do you run on?

If I’m on an open road I always try to run into traffic (left side, sidewalk if there is one). Bike path or trail- right side. But there is a bike path near where I live that has signage everywhere for runners to be on the left and cyclists to be on the right. But it almost does more harm than good because so many people just assume they should be walking/running on the right so then you’re constantly running into people if you are following the rules. &, yes, cyclists will tell you off. When I was on the path for the first time & didn’t know the rules a cyclist chewed me out at 5am (stopped, got super close, yelled a bunch) when we were the only 2 out there.
