After the first of the year I believe.
The participant numbers seem ahead of last year. I wound’t wait till January. Maybe closer to Thanksgiving this year.
Hey SD Mike…question from Sonoma County Mike. Do you actually swim in the inner harbor where all the boats are docked? Isn’t that water kinda polluted in there? Why don’t they swim in the ocean anyway?

go to powerhouse park on sunday am and do the 1.5 mile swim loop and you’ll see why most weekends

It’s because of the surf. Oceanside is a good surfing beach, and if it was over 3 or 4ft., people would be having heart attacks, and they would move the swim to the inside harbor anyway. There is no benifit to the RD to attempt a surf swim, so they just avoid it all together. I’ve actually heard complaints about the swells in the harbor in the past from people. These are not waves, but just the up and down motion of the water… Races have to cater to the lowest common ability now in todays enviorment, and waves are a thing of the past for almost all races…Lots of harbor venues now, where there used to be open ocean swims… All part of that pussification thing going on these days…
As Monty pointed out, the surf is the issue…and it can get big in March…hence the harbor swim.
The water in the harbor is ok…not nearly as bad as the swim at Baja in Ensenada Harbor which was like swimming through pure boat fuel.
That’s why I like LA, it is an oly with an ocean swim. Even the Hermosa and Redondo sprints have proper ocean swims. Pussification seems to be worst for the IM-branded races…

That’s because they are events. ![]()

That spot is Redondo is basically like a harbor, but the Hermosa and LA tris are at good surf beaches. Only problem is that they are held when the surf is at its smallest for the year typically. One can alwyas hope for a freak storm though…(-;
Heh heh, Redondo was like a lake this year. Hermosa has been decent some years and LA had some big surf last year, easy enough to deal with if you know what you’re doing.
I’m waiting for the year Malibu has huge surf…they’ll be pulling out hundreds of the corporate team people…

Two years or three ago i do beleive it was close. They cound’t keep the last bouey in place. The celeb/relay wave just got worked, there were people who hadn’t made it past the break when I went in the next wave. Was entertaining to watch to say the least.

Do you know what surf conditions would be like at Big Kahuna? I’ll be there in 2 weeks. Ocean swims make me happy! ![]()
you can check here for surf reports and water temps as well as a couple of live cams, http://www.surfline.com/reports/report.cfm?id=4188
.
I’ve never done the Big Kahuna, it’s in Santa Cruz isn’t it??? If the swim is around the pier there, then it will be flat. I remember from lifeguard comps there that area is protected, kind of like Santa Barbara this weekend. Ocean swim, but completely blocked by outer islands, so unless there is some major storm, they are like harbors…

I’d be more worried about the sea lions…
Just what a guy, who most likely will be swimming all on his own, really wants to hear. ![]()
COME WATCH!!! : )

I would, but I’ll be on a plane to LA that day!

As others have pointed out, the surf would be too unpredictable in March. The harbor actually isn’t that bad in March as a lot of boaters don’t really start using their boats until the summer.
I have not heard of anyone getting sick (although hypothermia can be an issue, a wetsuit beanie is not a bad investment).
