When do you replace a tire?

I just got my first flat and used that “tube in a can junk” but the tire was actually punctured and I pulled out a piece of steel wire…the question is…

Can I just put a new tube into it? Should the tire be replaced?

Let’s hear some roadie opinions…

Toss it. A slice through the casing means that you will continually pop tubes. In a pinch you can buy a little time by putting duct tape patch on the inside of the tire. I just replaced a tire with less than 200 miles on it.

Hold the tire up to the light. Can you see light?

Stretch it both directions around the hole. Can you see light?

If so, replace the tire. Broken collarbones take a long time to heal.

Thanks very much. It’s a sad day in tireville though.

I love that “tube in a can”. Totally worth using it (for $7) when you’re out on the road and would rather not take the time.
