When cross fit and a grass roots race collide - Ideas to foster this?

We just hosted our annual triathlon. We offer a sprint and olympic distance and for the first time in our 7 years of doing this we had a fair amount of cross-fitters sign up and compete in our sprint distance.

How do we draw them in?
As a USAT sanctioned event is there any way to make a separate division for them where they row, bike run?
How do we celebrate them getting into tri?

I think the row part would be tough, have to have ergs or boats.
But you could do an obstacle style course for them. Run/push ups/run/burpees/bike/something else/run/pill ups/ bike anyway you get the idea

There was a Spartan race in Asheville this past weekend, had a friend doing it. Just over 5000 people racing it. Plus they were charging spectators $20 a pop. There were several hundred walking around the course and you could go anywhere on course to spectate which was pretty cool

Do stand up paddle board instead of row

Why do you care that it is crossfitters versus any other sport or group of people coming in?

The answer is the same. You target your marketing, outreach, communication in such a way to foster getting people there.

Also, why a separate division or “celebration” for those snowflakes versus everyone else? Just because they have a common other interest?

What about golfer triathlon participants?

I think my point is that everyone new should be celebrated and invited. If you have a demographic with good potential for participation/showing up, target it. But, that doesn’t mean you alienate all your other participants by treating people differently.

Team up with a crossfit gym to do a 2 day event like crossfit games, both day events adding points up for the weekend. Triathlon day 1, weightlifting day 2

Combine the weight lifting with the swim…

Ok, maybe not.

I would love an event like that.

You’re talking about the sport which has things carved up into 12-15 5-year age categories (for 4-5 of which there’s really no physiological reason to break up (ages ~18-39 could all compete with each other, in my opinion), plus pro/elite, then often athena/clydes, military, physically challenged. Then often duathlon or aquathlon at the same, often each with its own categories within. Oh yeah, and often relays at the same time. Often with its own division within. Often different race distances at the same time (e.g. Sprint/Oly). Often each with its own divisions within. Then executive challenge treatment for IM.

This is the sport where you’re worried about adding an additional category?

Seems like good marketing to me, because often CrossFit gyms all sign up together. They’re very cliquey/culty. The Ragnar runs do a good job of catering to CrossFit (insert meme of hip-hop artist raining dollar bills).

Edit: If some triathlon did a team scoring system wwith the times of the top 8 CrossFitters from each “box” to cross the line combined into a team score. And give 'em like some chunk of iron as a trophy to display in the winning box. They’d go nuts. They love that shit.

All of that is true. That’s all I got.

I assumed this thread would be about the grassroots, inaugural loop pursuit triathlon losing their planned intersection control last-minute because the dane county sheriff’s pulled their coverage due to extra security and traffic management concerns for the crossfit games in madison this weekend…
