I ended up, after 8 months of PT and only being able to run 15 minutes pain-free, getting surgery on my IT band (I resisted, did shots, strengthening, got a personal trainer, you name it).
So, its been 4 1/2 weeks. I have done 2 bike rides on fairly flat trails, about 20 miles each, and have been swimming pretty well the past 2 weeks (although flip turns are still interesting!).
So, do I even dare with with Philly on June 26th? Anybody know how difficult the bike and run are? I’m willing to forgo the run, but then I have another Oly on July 18th…
I don’t want to be stupid, I’ll even forgo a year of running. I"m happy just to be riding and swimming. Any ideas? Its still puffy, but doc thinks it looks pretty good. thanks…
Why not find a runner and you do the bike/swim as part of a team and have some fun. It’s the running that will do any re-damage. That way you can break back into it and then do the Oly a month later.
Turtle,
Sorry to hear about your surgery. What kind of surgey do they do for the IT band? You’ve heard this before but listen to your body and adjust accordingly. I had an IT problem last year that haulted me for 5 months. Two years ago I broke my scapula and raced two weeks later (Duathlon). Later that year I broke my forearm (Radius) and races three weeks later (Triathlon) and even placed in my AG. So I guess I’m saying you never know, your body will tell you when to race again but after investing so much towards your surgery give your body a chance to heal properly.
GOOD LUCK!
