Wheelset Advice (1)

OK. here goes, i would like some advice on a new set of wheels. Here is some background. I used to ride alot in the 90’s. Back then i just bought a bike and rode, never really thought about upgrading any components, nor could i afford to, but i really enjoyed it. After over a decade of inactivity, i ballooned to 280 lbs. and after following the Tour De France for several years, figured enough was enough and joined my local YMCA for some spinning classes. ( tried getting back on my bike, but that was dissaponinting) Got down to 250 lbs and started looking for a new bike. settled on a Scott CR1 and got back on the road. Now I am 230 lbs, and would like a new set of wheels. My stock AkSIUMS (sp) are ok, but i had to true a few times after riding on a rough paved road. Most of my riding is done on very smooth roads. i have no intentions on racing, just getting fit and enjoying the ride, but i do like to push myself. My budget, and wife say that these wheels will have to last a looong time. No trading them for next years new models, so i have to make a wise choice here. I am interested in an aero wheel, since i ride alone, 35 to 45 miles, and mostly straight and smooth rodes. If i am being honest with myself, i also like the way they look. here is what i am looking at.

Spinergy Stealth PBO: the PBO spokes interest me, and i think it is an aero wheelset, although the thicker spokes would probably negate some of that.
Aerospoke Wheels: they seem to be made to last, and for big guys, but even though i will not race or count grams, they really weigh alot. Am i cancelling the benefits
of buying a scott CR1 buy riding on these?
HED 3: this is my high end choice, and would have to save up just to buy a used set, but if money was of no concern, i would get these. i know you really can’t compare these head to head, but would like to read your opinions. If you have used these great, but i’ll will listen to any advice i can get. My goal is to get to 200lbs, so i will always be a big guy. sorry for the long post, but i want to give you as much info as i can. thanks for all your help.

If you are riding for fitness and fun why do you need aero wheels? Sounds like you are the prime candidate for Open Pros (or DT 1.1) with your choice of hubs and 32 spokes.

Always trueable, comfortable and cheap.

I found this site when searching the for training wheels. No affiliation.

As a bigger guy, you’ll put a lot of stress on a wheelset. I recommend a pseudo-aero Velocity rim with 36 spokes unless you want to constantly true the wheels. It’s heavy, but it will last.
I can’t speak to the trispoke or Aerospoke. I don’t know how durable they are. Think durability over weight or aero for now. The weight and aero will come as you ride and the weight comes off. Then get a set of Zipp Clydesdale 404s as a gift to yourself when you reach 200lbs!

I agree, if you aren’t racing you really don’t need a super high end aero wheelset.
